DYK? Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNAs) are required to have critical care experience prior to acceptance into a nurse anesthesia program.

This experience lays the foundation for CRNAs to have the education and training necessary before practicing anesthesia.

The path to Air National Guard for Major Michael Wilhelm, CRNA, was anything but conventional.

After starting his career as an aircraft mechanic and electrical engineer 30 years ago, Michael was seeking a greater purpose and meaning in his life. He became an EMS responder in NYC in the aftermath of 9/11. That experience awakened something inside him. After meeting his wife, Laura, while teaching EMT courses, she encouraged him to pursue nursing, more specifically, a CRNA degree. Michael dedicated himself to nursing school and became a CRNA at 36 years old. He knew early on that this was the perfect career for him. He loved the critical thinking and the skill needed to execute under high pressure situations, but he still craved more. “I was striving for better,” he recalled.

In 2022, he joined the Connecticut Air National Guard where he currently serves on the Critical Care Air Transport Team and oversees Basic Life Support (BLS) training as Program Director. “I find great pride in giving back to our nation,” Michael shared.

His military career is the perfect complement to all his CRNA training and expertise.

Army Major Jon Pinter has always wanted to serve his country and make a difference in other’s lives. That’s why being a CRNA in the Army was his calling.

After enlisting in the Army National Guard as a combat medic after turning 17, he worked his way to become an RN in the Army Reserves. Via the Army’s Specialized Training Assistance Program (STRAP), Jon went to the Integrated Anesthesia Associates' Nurse Anesthesia Program of Hartford to become a CRNA.

Jon has served in the Army Reserves for nearly 20 years, including two tours to Afghanistan and Somalia. During his time in Afghanistan, Jon was a member of the Golden Hour Offset Surgical Team (GHOST) that was a specialized mobile unit that provided rapid surgical care to special ops forces. Jon shared that, “as the main combat anesthesia provider to our armed forces, we’re often called on to be a safety net for those doing the most dangerous missions in the Army.”

Jon enjoys mentoring new nurse anesthesiologists and medics in the Army. He currently practices at Hartford Hospital and Manchester Memorial Hospital.

Lieutenant Colonel Peter Arnold is nearing his third decade in the Army. For almost 20 years of his time in the Army, Peter has been the number one provider of anesthesia in our armed forces as a CRNA.

He was first introduced to the practice while training at Walter Reed Hospital as part of his Army rotation in LPN School. After attending the CRNA program at Central Connecticut State, Peter served two tours in Iraq and Somalia.

“The Army shaped my life and gave it purpose,” Peter shared. As the surgical team commander, he learned to work with limited resources and to “think outside of the box to always be focused and prepared to the best of my ability.” Oftentimes, he was the only anesthesia professional in the battlefield as a CRNA in a Forward Surgical Team.

While reflecting on his time in the Army with retirement on the horizon, Peter said that, “I’m proud of being part of a team with a singular goal to keep those in our armed forces safe.” You accomplished that goal and more, Peter!

CRNAs have been serving on the frontlines as the main providers of anesthesia care in the U.S. military since the Civil War.

On this Veterans Day, CTANA would like to recognize those among us who have assisted and cared for members of the armed forces to the full scope of practice.

Thank you Peter Arnold, Jon Pinter, Michael Wilhelm and every single CRNA who has served our country.

Watch this week for more from Peter, Jon and Michael on their experiences in the armed forces.

As a practicing CRNA since 2006, Celina Ortiz found herself working in the Veterans Affairs hospital system two years into her career and is still proudly serving as a VA employee today. As a CTANA member, Celina currently works at VA North Texas Health Care System. “I did not realize how moved I would be working with our veterans,” she shared. “I feel indebted to them. They’ve sacrificed a lot and given up so much to fight for this country and serve. This is a rewarding career and I feel so grateful working alongside our brave servicemen and women. There is not a better population out there.”
