Last month, Ohio became the 45th state to update the CRNA-physician relationship when legislation was passed to modernize the state’s anesthesia statutes.

The law, which goes into effect on June, 8, 2026, reflects current training, practice standards and patient care models for how anesthesia teams function in many healthcare settings.

Did you know? Sedation and anesthesia can make dental care more comfortable for patients, but they also increase the complexity of care. That’s why it’s critical that anesthesia is provided by a qualified, licensed professional focused only on patient safety, such as a CRNA.

CRNAs complete seven to eight and a half years of education to attain a master's or doctoral degree in nurse anesthesia. During that time, a student will gain nearly 9,400 hours of clinical experience, according to the AANA / American Association of Nurse Anesthesiology. Their training and expertise help ensure a safe, closely monitored, patient-centered experience for every procedure.

This Women’s History Month, we celebrate women who are empowering the next generation of CRNA leaders.

As program director of the Integrated Anesthesia Associates Nurse Anesthesia Program of Hartford (IAA NAPH), Maria Szafranski DNAP, CRNA, APRN, mentors students through a 36-month nurse anesthesia program with doctorate-level anesthesia courses and intensive clinical preparation.

“Watching our students grow their confidence and skills is incredibly rewarding. The training is demanding, and with that comes astute judgement and a commitment to patient safety that I know will take them far,” Dr. Szafranski said.

Students gain clinical anesthesia experiences ranging from routine to high acuity and complex cases at various clinical sites.

With more than 30 years as a certified registered nurse anesthetist, Marianne Cosgrove PhD, DNAP, CRNA, APRN, FAANA has experienced exciting changes in the field. In CRNA education, she has seen training evolve from certificate programs to master’s degrees and now to doctoral programs. “Clinical training has expanded to ensure that graduate CRNAs are experientially qualified to deliver any type of anesthesia to every patient across the lifespan for any kind of procedure,” shared the Program Director of the Yale New Haven Hospital School of Nurse Anesthesia and Assistant Professor in the Department of Nurse Anesthesia Practice at Central Connecticut State University (CCSU). Nurse anesthesia program curriculum currently integrates didactic coursework with hands-on experience that utilize up-to-date, evidence-based anesthesia technology and pharmacology.
