When your child first starts to talk, they are just learning how to use their articulators (e.g., tongue, lips, teeth) together to produce sounds. So, their speech sounds may not always be perfect and that’s okay!
Based on McLeod and Crowe, 2018, these sounds should be mastered by the following ages.
If your child hasn’t mastered an age appropriate sound, here are some tricks to help:
1. Model the correct articulation of the sound in words. If your child says “tat” repeat back “Kat” while over emphasizing the sound you corrected.
2. Try not to imitate your child’s incorrect speech sounds. No matter how cute their baby talk may sound 😉
3. Use the trifecta approach. Let your child see the correct sound by being at eye level with you, hear the correct sound, and feel the correct sound by touching your mouth or throat (wherever the sound is being produced).
