Many people don’t realize how much dialysis can disrupt every aspect of their lives. It’s time consuming and inconvenient, requiring treatment 3–6 days a week for 4–8 hours at a time; 9 out of 10 people on dialysis have to stop working as a result. And by the time your kidney function is so far gone that you need dialysis, it’s often too late to reverse the damage. 60% of people who start dialysis die within 5 years. If you wind up on a kidney transplant list, you could be waiting 3–5 years before you get a new organ.

That’s why we intervene early, long before you are close to needing dialysis. We’re committed to helping you keep your kidneys as healthy and functional as possible so the burdens of kidney failure never affect you or your family.

Regular exercise keeps us strong and healthy. In fact, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, adults who sit less and participate in moderate-to-vigorous physical activities have a healthy advantage over those who do not.

A sedentary lifestyle is a common risk factor for chronic kidney disease (CKD). That's because a lack of physical activity can result in any number of health complications, from obesity and high blood pressure to diabetes and cardiovascular disease, which are all conditions that can lead to kidney damage.

Regular exercise, on the other hand, has been shown to have numerous benefits for kidney health, including reducing the risk of developing kidney disease, improving kidney function, and enhancing the quality of life for people with kidney disease. If you have kidney disease, it is crucial to monitor your potassium levels regularly and take steps to keep them balanced.

Your nephrologist may recommend a low-potassium diet that limits high-potassium foods and avoids salt substitutes that contain potassium. Additionally, your doctor may prescribe medications like potassium binders, which help to remove excess potassium from the body.

View the following slides which list high-potassium foods to avoid and low-potassium foods to enjoy.

Chronic Kidney Disease is labelled a “silent killer” due to its lack of physical symptoms. Most people may not have any obvious symptoms until their kidney disease is more advanced. This presents a real problem for patients, where early diagnosis is key to slowing the progression of kidney disease to kidney failure. Just because you have these symptoms doesn’t mean you have kidney disease, but if they’re happening consistently over at least 6 months, it’s a good idea to talk to your doctor. You may notice that you:

- feel more tired and have less energy
- have trouble concentrating
- have a poor appetite
- have trouble sleeping
- have muscle cramping at night
- have swollen feet and ankles
- have puffiness around your eyes
- have dry, itchy skin
- need to urinate more often

Don’t Wait to Tackle Your Kidney Disease

37 million Americans live with kidney disease, but 70% of them aren’t able to get the care they need before they’re hit with kidney failure. And, in most cases, it’s because they just aren’t aware that they can slow down their disease with the right care.

Do any of these sound familiar?

-Your doctor said it's nothing to worry about right now. Change your diet and we’ll keep an eye on it.
-You’re seeing a kidney specialist already, but they’re so busy you’re not getting the time and attention from them you need to feel good about your treatment plan.
-You’d like to find a dietician who can help plan your diet with kidney-friendly meals that also taste good.

If so, then we can help.

Chronic kidney disease is a progressive disease that causes kidney damage and reduces the ability to function properly. Over time, this damage can cause waste to build up in the body, which can cause serious health complications.

Kidney disease and high blood pressure, or hypertension, are closely linked. Our recent blog explores the relationship between high blood pressure and kidney disease. Read more at https://hubs.la/Q01Jdsls0

Studies show a whole-food, plant-based diet, excluding meat, dairy, added fats and processed foods can help slow the progression of kidney disease. By lowering your risk of heart disease, diabetes, “bad” cholesterol, and weight gain, a plant-based diet has many benefits for managing kidney disease.

Having kidney disease puts you at risk for heart disease. A plant-based diet is rich in fiber and antioxidants and helps lower blood pressure, cholesterol, and inflammation, which reduces your risk for heart disease.

Healthy, plant-based foods have been shown to lower the risk for diabetes by helping your body use insulin better. For those who already have diabetes, plant-based diets have been shown to improve blood sugar levels.

Acidosis, a condition when there is too much acid in the blood can speed up the progression of kidney disease. Recent studies have found that diets high in plant foods lower the dietary acid load, which can slow the progression of CKD.

Sodium is an essential mineral that plays a crucial role in critical bodily functions. It helps regulate fluid balance, nerve and muscle function, and blood pressure. However, too much sodium can harm our health, leading to high blood pressure, heart disease, and stroke. In addition, a diet high in sodium can cause reduced function and strain the kidneys, ultimately leading to kidney disease.

The recommended daily sodium intake for adults is no more than 2300 mg, and for some groups, like those with chronic kidney disease, it's even lower, with a recommended daily intake of no more than 1500 mg. To help protect your kidneys, it's important to become aware of your salt intake and to focus on choosing low sodium foods, while limiting foods high in sodium. One big step is learning which high sodium foods to watch out for. Check the sodium content of your foods by always reading nutrition labels and choosing lower-sodium options whenever possible.
