If you’re unfamiliar with my style of feeding & swallowing therapy intensives, I am always testing recipes for the children. I try to find high protein, and alter with high fat & veggies. I am always creating the recipes with texture hierarchies at the forefront. This is important bc I could have multiple consistency constraints in 1 intensive. Plus, I need to make sure these can be blended smooth enough for tube blends. I am always choosing flavors & recipes the whole family can eat so the burden of multiple meals during 1 mealtime is reduced. The challenge is trying to find recipes that are created in a short time with minimal ingredients but I’m getting there! 🥰

It’s always so important to include the siblings in feeding therapy. This is Viv! She loves to sit and cheer her big sister on during feeding therapy so today, despite mom‘s nervousness, I gave her a fried chicken thigh, her first one ever! And this girl tore into it like the happiest little camper. She even clapped for herself when she was done.♥️

Many children are labeled with oral aversion when the underlying issue is actually oral defensiveness.

These may look identical on the surface—but neurologically, they are completely different.

Oral aversion is a protective, fear-based response.
Oral defensiveness is a sensory processing challenge.

When we confuse the two, we risk:
• Using the wrong strategies
• Increasing dysregulation
• Slowing progress

Accurate diagnosis isn’t optional—it’s the foundation of effective feeding therapy.

HIE Awareness Month is not just about recognition—it’s about understanding the depth of what these children do every single day.

Progress in this population doesn’t always look like milestones on a chart.
Sometimes it looks like regulation, coordination, safety, and trust.

To the families walking this path—your role is immeasurable.
To my patients—you continue to redefine what’s possible.
