Can’t believe we have started the new school year 🤯! Some of our kiddos have started this week and some are starting tomorrow 🤗. Here are some tips for parents to establish before school starts. Even if your kids have started already, it is never too late to establish a routine 🏫!

1. Establish a consistent routine ✏️.
2. Create a homework & study space 📖
3. Talk about feelings and expectations 📝.
4. Get organized together 📎.
5. Encourage independence 👍🏽.

Have an awesome start to the school year! Much success to students, parents and teachers!📚

Message from our CEO:

Thanks to everyone that donated to our first annual Marva’s closet! I am blown away by everyone’s generosity. To think this was an idea to honor my late mother and it turned into something I couldn’t have imagined 🤯. My mom was a teacher in inner city Chicago. Just like most teachers, she had many hats. One of those hats was making sure her 3rd graders had breakfast and clothes. Many of her students would come to class hungry with stained clothes or clothes that didn’t fit. So, she would buy granola bars, shirts, pants, and new undergarments for kids to change into. This was all from her own pockets. I was proud watching her as a teenager and always wanted to continue that legacy of giving 🙏🏽.

Thank you to those that donated clothes, backpacks and school supplies. We even had diapers, coloring books, shoes and dance wear donated. Wow✨. Thank you to my amazing executive team and therapists for organizing and setting things up for this past Saturday. Thank you to the clinical team that donated money to purchase backpacks and school supplies 🤗. What a blessing this was to be apart of this and to witness it. My mom (Marva) would have been so proud 💛. THANK YOU 🩷 and stay tuned for our upcoming plans for Marva’s closet 🤗

Somehow, we can always find the words for others yet we don’t have those same words for ourselves. Here’s the thing, we ALL want to tell ourselves good things and sometimes we can project that when we speak well of others. So what’s the blockage? Oftentimes, we don’t feel worthy of those words because we are 🗣TOO HARD ON OURSELVES! We judge and condemn ourselves for mistakes (past and present), we compare our lives to others, we zone in on what we “should” be doing instead of appreciating what we are doing, and for some of us, we have allowed other’s thoughts and judgments about us plant seeds of self-doubt and now we possess the fruits of not trusting ourselves and we’ve learned to dislike ourselves. Everyday we are striving to make the best choices for ourselves; there are certain factors we can control and others we can’t control. Making the best choice isn’t about trying to change what we can’t control but learning how to pivot and change what we can control. If you’re doing this already, bravo and if not, it’s still okay because you’re trying! Be kind to yourself, always. Practice by saying to yourself what you would say to your closest friend. Love on you today 🤗.

Because we don’t validate that doing the work on yourself IS work too. Most of us work full time jobs, have other jobs and roles that take our time. Yet the one job we don’t count the cost for is changing; learning and unlearning is a big deal. Changing uses the spiritual, emotional, mental and physical capacity. When you’re learning and unlearning you’re literally breaking the foundation of what was, cleaning up that foundation and relaying a whole new foundation. You are literally breaking generational patterns of dysfunction so you can be better and the next generation can be better. That’s double work! You’re tired. And you’re okay. Get some rest. And make an appointment today with one of our therapist that can help you move through the exhaustion while you rest.

Message from our CEO!

We’re excited to host Marva’s Closet, a special clothing drive event happening at AFPC!

This event is personal, named in honor of my mom, Marva, who didn’t have much growing up but made it her mission to give to others 🤗. As a teacher, she often bought extra clothes, school supplies, and hygiene products for her students, never wanting a child to go without. She always dreamed of having a closet full of clothes (and she did as an adult, using my closet too😂), and now we’re bringing that dream to life for the community.

🧺 We’re collecting gently used clothes, shoes, backpacks and school supplies for students K-12 grade.
💛 Everything collected will be given out for FREE at the event
📍 Hosted at A Freeman’s Place Counseling

✨ If you’d like to donate, please message me!
✨ If you or someone you know needs support, come through…we got you! 🤗

Please consider donating if you can!
