Extended Exhale Breathing or “long exhale” technique reduces stress by actively engaging the parasympathetic nervous system which is response for relaxation! Here’s how to do it: breathe in slowly through your nose for a count of 4. Purse your lips slightly and exhale very slowly through your mouth for a count of 8. Concentrate on the feeling of air leaving your body and tension leaving your shoulders. Continue this pattern for 60 seconds!

Want to teach your children about mindfulness but don’t know where to start. Give this game a try! The wiggle and freeze game is a fun way for kids to start practicing mindfulness and improve their awareness of bodily sensations using movement. The game involves wiggling, dancing, stomping, or jumping until you say “freeze”. Once everyone stops moving, encourage your children to pay close attention to the sensations they feel in their bodies.

The four primary trauma responses are automatic survival mechanisms activated by the nervous system when facing perceived threats. These responses, rooted in protecting oneself from danger, can become ingrained behaviors that impact mental, emotional, and physical health, often manifesting as anxiety, people-pleasing, or aggression. Understanding these responses is the first step in managing and beginning the healing process.
