This month, your LBS dietitians are chatting about ! Gut health can be complex and confusing, and the truth is that our gut health is affected by a variety of factors (environment, stress, physical activity, sleep, medications etc.) Among these, we know nutrition of course plays a vital role, so we are here to help you with incorporating gut-friendly foods 🫐🍌🥑🍶🥙💛

This week, we’re chatting 🫘 and specifically 🌱! Flaxseed is the seed of the flax plant and contains high amounts of fiber, including prebiotics, and omega-3 fatty acids.

Used in its whole or ground form, flaxseed has become a popular ingredient in cereals, breads, crackers, bars, and baked goods.

What are prebiotics? 🫘 Prebiotics are a non-digestible food ingredient (fiber) that promotes the growth of beneficial microorganisms in the intestines. Because prebiotic fibers are not fully digestible by the gut, they serve as “food” for the good bacteria in the intestinal tract. Prebiotic fibers are found in may fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds and whole grains.

Check out these Cinnamon Flax Muffins recipe to include some pre-biotic rich flaxseeds into your day! 🥧😋

This week, we’re chatting 🦠 and specifically 🍶! Kefir is a a fermented dairy drink rich in probiotics, although it can also be made using a dairy-free milk alternative.

Kefir is commonly consumed on its own as a beverage, or in smoothies, oatmeal, or poured over granola/cereal.

What are probiotics? 🦠 Probiotics are live microorganisms, typically bacteria, that are similar to those found naturally in the gut. Consuming probiotics helps to maintain a healthy balance of the good gut bacteria, especially when disrupted by illness, antibiotic use, or a poor unbalanced diet.

Check out this awesome Banana Walnut Oatmeal with Kefir recipe to get a healthy dose of probiotics in your breakfast ☺️🍌🥣

Our LBS dietitian, Rachel, has been working on furthering her expertise in how nutrition can play a role in women’s hormonal health.

5 Key Nutrients to aid in Women’s hormonal health:

Magnesium- Magnesium is involved in the synthesis and regulation of many hormones. It has been shown to help regulate the menstrual cycle, ease PMS symptoms and contribute to overall hormone balance. It may also play a role in fertility and insulin sensitivity. Magnesium-rich foods include avocado, bananas, nuts, seeds, leafy greens, whole grains and legumes.

Omega 3’s- Omega-3 fatty acids possess anti-inflammatory properties which can positively impact hormonal balance and may ease symptoms of PMS and PCOS. Their contribution to cellular membranes aids in hormone production within the body. Foods rich in Omega-3 include salmon and other fatty fish, flaxseeds, chia seeds, and walnuts.

Calcium- Crucial for bone health/density, and hormone regulation particularly pertaining to the parathyroid gland. Some calcium-rich foods include dairy products, leafy green vegetables, tofu, and chia seeds.

Vitamin D- Vitamin D plays a critical role in calcium absorption, and also influences the production and activity of certain hormones such as insulin, parathyroid hormone, estrogen and testosterone. Vitamin D-rich foods include fatty fish, cheese, and mushrooms, although adequate sunlight and supplementation are usually the best sources of Vitamin D.

Vitamin B6- Vitamin B6 is involved in the production of neurotransmitters and hormones, including serotonin and melatonin. Foods rich in B6 include poultry, fish, potatoes, bananas and some fortified cereals.

Want more guidance on how to incorporate these nutrients daily and maintain healthy hormone balance? Book a session with Rachel for an individualized approach!
