Breastfeeding can feel really awkward at first. Baby is learning to suck, swallow, and breathe and you are learning to get your breast tissue into a little tiny mouth for nourishment over and over again.

This takes a lot of coordination between the two of you.

Please know that the first six weeks is a time of learning for the both of you and that things will start to feel better by eight weeks. By 3 months, SO MUCH BETTER.

If you are:

•Having a lot of pain throughout the entire feeding
•Your ni***es are cracked and bleeding
•Baby won’t latch consistently
•You are getting mastitis over and over
•Your baby is losing weight

These things ARE NOT normal and I would recommend a lactation visit.

Nourish Lactation Services offers home visits within the West Michigan area helping families to reach their breastfeeding goals. Phone consults also available.

I am not a believer in pain-free . I do believe it exists for SOME …but it is rare. In order to get that baby out of your body, it has to expand and open in ways that are other-worldly. Why wouldn’t those sensations be intense?

Pain, whether emotional or physical, is generally a message to our brain to respond to something that is impacting our well-being. It makes complete sense from a very instinctive, primordial level, to be afraid of pain. By responding to it, it keeps us safe. But in -try to remember it’s GOOD, POWERFUL, and will bring you your . 📸

One of the greatest things I get to witness is couples drawing closer together ♥️♥️as they are preparing for the birth of their baby.

is such a big change. It’s hard to know what to expect. How exactly do you prepare? You’re a great couple, but how do you become parents together?

Explore that in my upcoming in- person beginning October 7th. My classes are perfect for those couples wanting ALL the information about labor, birth, and keeping their thriving.✨♥️

One of the things I do to build my knowledge and stay current in the birthing world (which is then shared with my students) is to sit down and talk with midwives, doctors, doulas etc and hear about what’s happening in the hospitals, birth centers, and homes.

This weekend I sat down with Rebecca Burkett of Allomother Midwifery in Lansing. SO grateful for her time!

We talked about variances from normal in birth and how the midwifery model of care handles different situations. (This is how home birth has remained a safe option for birthing your baby).

I also learned even more about placentas!! I loved them before but now? Aah. Amazing!

If you are seeking a second opinion about your prenatal care, are considering a home birth and are near the Lansing area-I suggest you reach out to her.

Pregnancy, childbirth and more!

Welcome to Grand Rapids Natural Birth and Pregnancy and Nourish https://www.facebook.com/Nourishourbabies/, a personalized birth and breastfeeding education service to help support you and your partner as you figure out what options will be best for birth, breastfeeding, and beyond! I’ve cultivated relationships with area birth workers, toured hospitals, as well as connected with midwives and OB/GYNs in order to provide the greatest resources to my students and to continually learn more about the culture of birth in our community. I talk about the hard and messy things of birth honestly…boldly… so you are prepared for most all situations that may come your way. I’ll help you get ready to make the easy and hard decisions by asking challenging questions ahead of time, I’ll help you think about what you want for your birth and how to transform that into a birth plan and communicate these ideas with your care providers. In class we also discuss preparing for postpartum, relationships, and how to thrive instead of simply surviving through the early weeks and months after baby arrives earthside. I believe in you and your ability to birth well. It will be a life-changing experience, but I can show you and your birth partner what you can do to birth confidently. I do not believe in the concept of a pain-free birth…I believe in having tools and knowledge to help you in your journey. However, I do NOT believe in women suffering through childbirth. There is no shame in a woman choosing medications to assist her in having a great birth…but a family must go into this choice knowing what the risks and benefits are. There are lots of amazing ways to birth a baby…and I honor all of them. And I am more than just birth. After baby arrives, I can help with breastfeeding and answer those “is this normal” questions. Breastfeeding is different for every mom and baby…and I seek to provide gentle, compassionate care and education to help mothers and families reach their breastfeeding goals.
