IN LOVING MEMORY OF POPE FRANCIS – ETERNAL REST GRANT UNTO HIM, O LORD

Is is with profound sorrow that we share the news of the passing of our beloved Holy Father, Pope Francis, who entered eternal life on Easter Monday, the day after celebrating the Resurrection of our Lord. Despite recent hospitalization for pneumonia, the Holy Father’s strength, resilience, and unwavering faith allowed him to recover just enough to offer Easter greetings to the faithful in Rome—his final act of pastoral love and devotion.

Pope Francis was more than the head of the Catholic Church. He was a shepherd to the marginalized, a voice for the voiceless, and a living testament to mercy, humility, and hope. His papacy touched hearts far beyond the Vatican, bringing compassion and justice to the forefront of our global conscience.

As one Catholic family, we at Catholic Cemeteries of the Archdiocese of Newark join millions around the world in mourning this immense loss. We pray for the peaceful repose of his soul and trust in his intercession in Heaven. We also pray for comfort and unity among all those grieving—especially those within our cemeteries, who understand the pain of parting with loved ones.

Sacred Art Meets Modern Memorial: Historic Pietà Graces Cemetery Entrance. From Carrara’s ancient quarries to East Hanover: How a masterpiece’s journey transforms Gate of Heaven’s entrance into a destination of artistic and spiritual significance

As autumn paints the landscape in brilliant hues of amber and gold, Gate of Heaven Cemetery welcomes a profound new addition to its grounds – a masterful interpretation of Michelangelo’s final work, the Rondanini Pietà. Standing 16 feet tall in luminous Carrara marble, this remarkable sculpture now graces the cemetery’s entrance, offering a striking visual welcome and a profoundly moving spiritual presence to all who pass by.

A Legacy Completed
The story of this magnificent statue begins in 1564 with Michelangelo Buonarroti, who worked on the original Rondanini Pietà until just days before his death at age 89. Unlike his famous Vatican Pietà, completed when he was just 24, the Rondanini remained intentionally unfinished. It is a poignant meditation on mortality and divine love that speaks to the artist’s own spiritual journey.

Nearly five centuries later, this profound artistic and spiritual legacy finds new life at Gate of Heaven Cemetery. Crafted by the master artisans of Pedrini Sculptors in Carrara, Italy, the completed interpretation emerges from the same mountains where Michelangelo selected his marble.

Using traditional techniques passed down through generations, these contemporary artists have achieved something remarkable – a bridge between past and present that honors Michelangelo’s vision and modern spiritual needs.
