Today, the Connecticut Society of Genealogists honors the life and legacy of Martin Luther King Jr.—a leader whose story reminds us why genealogy matters.

While Dr. King was born in Atlanta, his work and influence reached Connecticut in meaningful ways. He visited the state in 1959, speaking in Hartford and inspiring local clergy, students, and civil rights advocates. Many Connecticut residents marched, organized, and carried forward the movement he led while creating memories and family stories that remain part of our state’s history.

On this day, we encourage you to:
Explore civil rights–era records in Connecticut
Preserve oral histories from elders who lived during that time
Remember that documenting all families helps tell a fuller history

Genealogy is more than names and dates—it is the story of people, communities, and the ongoing pursuit of justice.
