‘Draw a Picture of Menstruation’
As weird as it sounds, but believe us, it is a cracking idea to address a taboo subject.
Over the years of CSR initiatives and engagement activities, we have come to realize that communicating health and well-being to adolescents is fiddly. Adolescents don’t always respond to instructions, they respond to spaces where they feel seen, heard, and free to speak in their own language. Art has been a great mediator for these conversations in our CSR endeavors. That is why as a part of our CSR initiative in Hyderabad, we collaborated with our partner NGO, C3, for a creative poster-making activity on the concept of menstruation. The goal was not to test what they knew, but to comprehend how they thought. For many, it was the first time they put on paper the awkward questions they carry or the stories they have observed at home and in society. The outcome was a collection of colorful and authentic ideas and perspectives.
This experience reminded us that change begins with acknowledgement. Before correcting misconceptions, one must understand where they come from. Before offering knowledge, one must recognize the courage it takes for adolescents to unlearn and relearn in a world that often stigmatizes natural processes.
Our volunteers stood alongside the students not as instructors, but as allies. By encouraging creativity, they allowed conversations to grow organically. This initiative nurtured trustful bonds, safe space, and deeper conversations. For us, the true success was in realizing that awareness is not delivered; it is co-created.
