07/20/2025

The road map often changes. I strongly believe having extra prenatal preparation and birth support is worth it. It can be really helpful to have a doula during a long first-time labor for emotional and informational support; for subsequent births to talk through birth trauma and to have extra suppor...

Doula Talks post on Personality~

August Doula Question: What Qualities Do You Think Make a Great Doula?

Hi, all! This is Emma from Little Lamb Doula Care. Personality makes a great doula, and the amazing thing about personality is that each and every doula has a unique one!

The key for the client is to pick the doula they feel gets them. Pick a doula who meshes with your personality, someone you enjoy spending time with, and who you trust to be a great part of your birth team.

Of course, you'll also want a doula who has a whole lot of comfort techniques up their sleeve and will be a great emotional and informational support, but the heart of the doula comes from the personality and the rest tends to flow from there.

July Doula Talk Question

Hi, all! It's Emma at Little Lamb Doula Care! One thing I always pack in my doula bag is a foot pump for blowing up birth balls and peanut balls. When I took my birth doula training, my trainer mentioned that she always keeps this on hand since she's noticed hospitals tend to misplace their pumps. This really stayed with me, and I pack one every time!

In addition to a foot pump, I pack massage oil in case mom wants a hand or foot massage, and of course, I pack a bunch of other helpful birth doula tools as well!

But at the end of the day, it's usually my voice, touch, and encouragement that helps the most. As doulas, it's most important that we bring ourselves, energized, focused, and ready to assist mom and family!

I'm holding a little event at a local park in East Lansing for expectant moms (or women thinking about becoming moms)! This would be a great chance to connect with some fellow moms and also to ask me any birth related questions you have on your mind, including if you're wondering what a doula is! An RSVP is needed, so please Comment or DM if you are interested. I'll have light refreshments.

Doula Talk Question: "What led you to become a doula?"

Hi, everyone! I'm Emma at Little Lamb Doula Care. I really believe I've found my calling as a birth doula, but it took some time to get here. I struggled with finding what I was interested in in college and predictably, I felt aimless after graduation; I just couldn't seem to find my place. However, sometime before graduation, I watched a youtube video by Bridget Teyler about her pathway to becoming a doula. As I watched it, a little spark began within me. I thought to myself, "I could do that!". It took some time for me to take the leap, but eventually I thought to myself, "let's just do it! You've been thinking about this a while!"
And it was just perfect— I was fascinated by labor and the birth process, and I highly value mothers, fathers, family, children, and those relationships. I have a nurturing spirit, and I fit right in with helping mothers through the transitions of pregnancy, birth, and the initial postpartum period. I think birth work is a very important profession, and I think it is really needed by many mothers and families.

I really believe birth is a natural process and that women can have great birth experiences. I would love to assist you with/at your birth! You can find out more about me and my doula care at littlelambdoula.com 😊
