Pain with intimacy, like many pelvic issues, is common, but definitely should not be accepted as normal! If you are holding your breath this Valentine's day about being physical with your partner, consider pelvic floor physical therapy to help overactive and painful muscles relax, so that seggs can be painless (dare I say fun?) again!

While I might be openly weeping as my maternity leave comes to an end 😭, I am excited to get Great Lakes Pelvic Rehab back up and running to see people for their pelvic dysfunction, hip pain, back pain, and more! Even more exciting, I am now in a physical location with in East Lansing ❀️ I will still see some people in the home on a case by case basis, but being in my own space allows me to treat more people with more resources (hellooo dry needling cart, goodbye "box o'needles!")

Are you sick of mapping out every toilet on your travels? Sick of persistent leakage and pad purchases? Wanting to improve core strength after having a baby? (Same same)

This is less meant to be fear mongering, and more to pose the point that pelvic floor dysfunction is so prevalent, and people do not always realize it. There are the obvious signs and symptoms like leaking when you sneeze, or pain with seggs. But then there are the less obvious signs like mystery persistent hip pain, tailbone pain with sitting, or feeling like you can't get your entire poo out. When I go to my advanced pelvic floor classes (where we practice on each other), it is rare when someone doesn't walk away with something to work on. As pelvic floor therapists!

The beautiful web of muscles down there have so many implications to the rest of the body. And even though they can cause all kinds of trouble, they are treatable!

Do you think you have pelvic floor dysfunction? Or perhaps a lingering low back, hip, or abdominal pain?

This exercise is so simple, but so effective for helping with abdominal separation/DRA! It helps to coordinate the breathing diaphragm with the rest of the core muscles, including the pelvic floor, abdominals, and spinal stabilizers. As this gets easier, it has some really lovely progressions to maximize core strength.

Okayyy editing is a little choppy so I could squeeze my wordy self into the insta limit, but here is an exercise that fits in nicely to early postpartum exercise to help with core coordination and improving an abdominal separation.

01/12/2026

Assessing for abdominal separation is pretty easy, and leads into a nice treatment option. Remember, 1-2 fingers of separation is completely normal. More than that, and it might be harder to get some core stabilization.

Doing the small head lifts 1-2 times/day, maybe up to 10 repetitions, is an easy way to start improving abdominal recruitment and separation.

Trying the potentially helpful hacks so you don't have to waste your time. While kinesiotape can give good feedback for postural checks, I really didn't notice it on my abdomen. Guess it's back to the exercise mat for me πŸ€·πŸΌβ€β™€οΈ

2026: reasonable goals
Minimize pain, maximize strength.
Your pelvic health isn't "just kegels."
.. But really, though, did anyone else read this in the voices of Aidy Bryant and Bowen Yang??

Ember, our little fire baby πŸ”₯, made her way earthside September 16th. Everyone is happy and healthy. She is our new favorite tiny obsession 😍

We are going to take time as a family to bond and snuggle, so social posts will likely be limited. I'll start seeing clients again somewhat soon!
