We started this page seeking a living liver donor for Mike. Placement on the list for a liver transplant is based on need. Mike’s condition escalated very quickly in December and January which unfortunately prevented a living liver donation as donors must go through weeks of testing to make sure their health is not compromised. Due to the worsening of his condition Mike qualified for a liver from a deceased donor and underwent transplant surgery on January 20. He was released from Henry Ford hospital today and will continue with outpatient follow up and physical therapy. We will be forever thankful to his donor and their family and to his surgical and medical team.

We are so grateful to everyone who has responded and especially to those who have filled out the questionnaire. You have or will receive an email telling you Mike has not yet been listed with Henry Ford. This is correct because he is still completing some additional tests to verify he is strong enough for the procedure. Those will be done December 30 and January 3.

Please share. Mike Herdus, who has devoted his entire life to helping others, needs help now. Despite having never abused alcohol or substances he has been diagnosed with end stage cirrhosis. His doctors don’t know why this has happened but the only way to save Mike’s life is through a liver transplant. The waiting list for a deceased donor is long. However, there is no waiting list for a living donor. Living liver donation is when a live person donates a portion of their liver. A living donor’s liver will regenerate in about six weeks. Mike has had to leave his job as a group home manager for developmentally disabled adults and is unable to enjoy any of his former hobbies such as grilling and traveling to Northern Michigan. His wife and two young adult children desperately want him back. Anyone between the ages of 18 and 55 with blood type A+ or A- and in good health can donate.
