RP• When Ofelia Esparza () walks into the Vincent Price Art Museum at East Los Angeles College this month, she’ll see something she once only dreamed of: nearly a century of her art filling a gallery just blocks from where she grew up.

At 93, the celebrated Chicana altarista, artist and retired teacher is finally getting her first-ever museum retrospective.

Titled “Ofelia Esparza: A Retrospective,” the exhibit opens October 18 and features 90 works of never-before-seen drawings, paintings, printmaking and the altars that shaped how Día de los Mu***os is celebrated in the U.S. and beyond.

🙏🏽🕯️ Thank you for naming Ofelia Esparza A Retrospective the 10 LA shows to see in October

Looking forward to seeing you all at the Opening Reception Saturday Oct 18 5pm-8pm

“Master altarista Ofelia Esparza has helped popularize the Mexican tradition of altar-making — honoring deceased loved ones through temporary memorials composed of photographs, flowers, food, and other symbolic offerings — in the United States over the past several decades. A native of East Los Angeles, Esparza is a sixth-generation altar-maker and began crafting public altars in 1979 at the community art center Self-Help Graphics, where she also took up printmaking. This retrospective recreates some of her most memorable altars alongside other artwork and archival material, tracing a seven-decade career that has intersected with major movements for social justice and civil rights.”

🕯️✨ ARTIST SPOTLIGHT - Kiara Aileen Machado
“My identity is tied to the diaspora and isthmus by my Guatemalan mother, Salvadoran father, and Honduran great grandmother, I explore this identity in my work through themes of intergenerational trauma and the complex issues concerning Central America and the Caribbean. My recent travels to Honduras, Guatemala, and Cuba have shaped my practice and how the role of the artist is dependent on geopolitical space. My practice promotes communal healing and preserves collective memory.”

🕯️✨ ARTIST SPOTLIGHT - Maritza Torres
“Maritza believes that creativity is needed in these times in every aspect of life. We are living in a time where there is no going back to normal and this can feel very scary. But, we also have a chance to evolve, to mend, to transition into something more fulfilling. Focusing on sustainability, experimentation and allowing the artist to be an inventor and generational healer. Her work is non linear, participating on a new ecosystem that is currently being realized.”

Our collective is made up of our family—myself, Alfonso Aceves, my wife Adriana Carranza, and our four children: Sara, Ione, Diego, and Emilio. While Adriana and I are the grounding force behind much of the work, our creative practice is a true collaboration that reflects the voices and experiences of our entire family.”
