Red is more than a color. It’s a call to action. ❤️

We wear red because cardiovascular disease is the #1 cause of death for Black women before, during, and after pregnancy. Too often it goes unrecognized and untreated and it is taking the lives of our Black mamas. But this CAN be prevented.

If you are Black, your heart is at risk, not because of race, but because of racism and the inequities that impact our care.

Did you know?
🔺 Preeclampsia can increase your risk of heart disease for 10 to 15 years after giving birth.
🔺 Black mothers may be more than 3x as likely to develop dangerous heart failure.

If you have had preeclampsia or are at risk, your care team should include a cardiologist, a primary care provider, and a nutritionist. Your heart health matters before, during, and long after pregnancy.

We wear red for awareness. We wear red for prevention. We wear red for our mothers.❤️

Still think breastfeeding is just a feeding choice? At PHEI we believe breastfeeding is more than simply a food. It has health benefits for both the mom and baby, including the maternal heart. This is critical for Black women who are less likely to successfully breastfeed and more likely to have heart complications during and after pregnancy. Grow your skill set with PHEI by joining this free webinar on 2/20/26 at 12:30 to learn from our resident IBCLCs Melanie and Brittany.

New Jersey Bill A2188 requires preeclampsia evaluation to save lives. Preeclampsia is a serious cardiovascular condition and a leading cause of maternal death, and Black women are disproportionately affected.

Early evaluation = earlier treatment.
Earlier treatment = better outcomes for birthing people and babies.

Love looks like prevention. 💜 Thanks to our partnership with Aetna, PHEI’s Cuff It program puts blood pressure cuffs in the hands of pregnant people and gives them the knowledge to act early.

This week, a participant used her cuff, trusted her instincts, and received lifesaving care. This is what love looks like: early action, timely care, and safer births.

📣 Share this story and support maternal health programs. Because protecting Black mothers and babies is an act of love.

Happy Black History Month! Celebrating 100 years, this month we honor the Mothers of Gynecology, Anarcha, Lucy, and Betsey, enslaved Black women whose lives were exploited by Dr. J. Marion Sims in the 1840s to advance gynecological medicine. These women endured painful surgeries without anesthesia and reinforced the narrative that Black people don’t feel pain which is a misconception in modern medicine that is still reinforced today.

While we have a long way, we still have a long way to go for just and equitable care for Black mama. This month and every month the fight for reproductive justice continues.

Today we wear red! Why? Because cardiovascular disease is the #1 cause of death for Black women before, during, and after pregnancy. Unrecognized and untreated, it is taking the lives of our Black mamas, but this CAN be prevented. If you are Black, your heart is at risk. Not because of race, but because of racism.

❤️Protect your heart with these 4 steps:
1. Know your numbers. Make sure you have a validated blood pressure cuff at home and know your readings.

2. Watch for high blood pressure.140+ (top number) or 90+ (bottom number) is a concern during pregnancy or postpartum. Only one number needs to be elevated.

3. Get support through PHEI. Pregnancy and birth should not be scary. Our team of experts will walk with you every step of the way.

4. Ask for help early if you feel unwell. Symptoms like severe headaches, chest pain, shortness of breath, or swelling are not normal and deserve immediate attention.

DM us or visit PHEI today to sign up for support. Your heart and your baby deserve care.
