Isaiah House

Isaiah House Providing shelter, nourishment, and support to Essex county's most vulnerable families and individuals since 1988.

Isaiah House has been a community fixture since 1988 and our mission is to reduce the prevalence of homelessness throughout Essex County and more specifically within the Oranges and Newark. As the brain child of an alliance between the Community Service Council of the Oranges and Maplewood (a division of United Way of Essex and West Hudson), the Junior League of the Oranges and Short Hills and the

Concerned Clergy of East Orange, Isaiah House remains the only shelter in East Orange and provides temporary and permanent lodging, food, social and financial services, as well as comfort and hope for over 150 families per year. We are dedicated to those families and individuals who are considered “most fragile” – that is, those who have been devastated by unemployment, illness, drug addiction, teenage pregnancy, fires and crises. Isaiah House offers a variety of support services to family members, including life skills training, instructions in household and money management, job search assistance, tutoring, medical referrals, and on-site drug and alcohol support groups. One of our proudest accomplishments is that unlike other agencies and shelters, Isaiah House works diligently to ensure that the family unit remains in tack. That is, both a mom and dad, husband and wife, just mom or dad as heads of household or whatever the family make up, they can remain together with their children at Isaiah House rather than having to separate and stay in multiple places. Our unique approach is based on a firm belief that individual progress and development is enhanced and augmented by the assistance of loved ones. Barring the excruciating funding cuts, Isaiah House has a reputation for dignified and comprehensive servicing. Without financial assistance, we risk losing a community treasure that has been home to thousands and has changed many lives for the better. Our shelter programs serve: teenage girls/boys, disabled single women, women living with HIV/AIDS, mommy and me (border babies) and families in addition to an on-site day care for the residents and a food pantry for the community. Isaiah House also provides prevention funds to prevent homelessness, rental subsidies to people who are disabled, people living with HIV/AIDS and the high functioning mentally challenged. STATISTICS

Yesterday, our Isaiah House management and administration team gathered at the beautiful Orange Lawn Tennis Club for a day of connection and visioning. We broke bread together, practiced yoga and meditation, and took intentional time to reconnect with our mission while reimagining our future.

A heartfelt thank you to our fearless leader, Zammeah Bivins-Gibson, for pouring into us and creating space to relax, recharge, and renew. 💛

Last week, we shared a truly inspiring project: an amazing collaboration with architecture student Sana'a Smith to redesign a communal space for our NJ Lead Women's Re-Entry program.

Sana'a's vision, inspired by the powerful architecture of the National Museum of African American History and Culture, is all about creating a space for peace, comfort, and safety. But we need your help to make her vision a reality.

Your support helps us restore dignity and hope for the women who will use this space. Let's finish what we started together!

We're thrilled to share an incredible community service project happening right here at Isaiah House! We're collaborating with Sana'a Smith, a talented third-year architecture student at Hampton University, who is redesigning a communal space for our NJ Lead Women's Re-Entry program clients.

For an agency like Isaiah House, which provides vital emergency shelter services, it's incredibly important to offer a warm, welcoming, clean, and dignified residential facility. This project is helping us do just that. Sana'a's passion for design, inspired by the powerful architecture of the National Museum of African American History and Culture, is truly remarkable. She's channeling that inspiration to create a space that fosters peace, comfort, and safety for women embarking on a new chapter.

This project is a beautiful example of how architecture can be a tool for healing and transformation, and we need your help to bring her vision to life! Sana'a has carefully selected specific furniture pieces to complete the redesign.

🚨 URGENT ACTION NEEDED 🚨

The Senate just passed the Reconciliation Bill—nicknamed the “One Big Beautiful Bill”—and it's now back in the House. This version includes devastating cuts to Medicaid, SNAP, and housing programs that directly impact shelters and services for our most vulnerable neighbors.

💥 If passed, 17 million Americans could lose health insurance, and shelters across the country, like Isaiah House, will face reduced capacity, fewer services, and more families forced into homelessness.

At Isaiah House, this would mean:

- Fewer resources to provide stability, care, meals, and housing to our residents
- Increased strain on our frontline staff, who are already stretched thin
- A higher risk of unsheltered homelessness for families and individuals we serve every day

The NJ Coalition to End Homelessness is in D.C. right now meeting with lawmakers, but we need YOUR voice too!

📞 Call or email your representatives—especially Congressmen Kean, Smith, and Van Drew—and urge them to vote NO.

📢 Share how these cuts would affect Isaiah House and other shelters in your community.
