East Portland Collective is doing outreach to houseless neighbors in the Lents area today (8/11), and providing cooling stations at Lents Park tomorrow (8/12) and Friday (8/13) afternoon. To support their efforts, you can DM them about donating the following supplies:

"- Electrolyte drinks (even just a six-pack or whatever you can afford) or powders

- Water bottles

-FOOD (anything that’s individually wrapped, like sandwiches, or portioned in ways in which it’s easy to hand out. So far, we have 36 peanut butter&jelly sandwiches; folks who are houseless seem to really appreciate meal-type of things, beyond snacks. Some folks will be hungry and stuck at their camps because it will be too hot to venture out and/or some can’t afford the risk of leaving their belongings behind without someone supervising)

-SNACKS. We could use granola bars, energy bars, nuts… things that are rich in protein, salty, and not too high in sugar.

-FRUIT: people tend to ask for bananas and citrus fruit

-Cooler(s). Collectively, we have about 3-4 coolers but we could use more! Styrofoam coolers are great too because we can drop them off with folks with ice and supplies in them.

-ICE

We could also use alternative sharp disposal containers to leave with folks who need them (Google what can make an alternative sharp container to see if you have anything around your house that we could repurpose)

If you have ideas for anything else that would bring people comfort in this heat, please ask. We are willing to distribute almost anything that people give us."

A new resource center for the Filipino community, Filipino Bayanihan Center, has recently opened in SE Portland at 1537 S.E. Morrison St.

Nikki De Leon, one of the founding board members: "β€œBayanihan is a word that encompasses collective action. We want the center to embody the spirit of people uplifting each other. Hope is something the community needs. This center is a place of hope.”

The center has started a free food pantry offering staples found in Filipino homes and a lending library and plans a series of educational discussions. There are also plans to help Filipino sailors get COVID-19 vaccinations when they come to port in Astoria and Vancouver.

Brave Space, LLC is hiring! We are seeking a full time Mental Health Therapist, and a part time BIPOC Clinical Supervisor. Details and application processes can be found at www.bravespacellc.com/joinus.

As our commitment to larger liberation efforts, Brave Space’s priority for this hiring round is improving and expanding our services to trans/non-binary people of color (TGNB, BIPOC). We have started that effort by cultivating deep team cultural practices that support and heal past workplace oppression for TGNB staff so that we support everyone showing up fully. We have built a cohort of QTPOC clinicians, and hope to expand that cohort during this hiring round. Brave Space would also consider white candidates with strong anti-oppression experience and a proven commitment to liberation efforts, both personally and communally.

To support our BIPOC staff, Brave Space also seeks a trans/non-binary supervisor of color (TGNB, BIPOC) who can help influence mid-management level support and decision-making. This position is 4-8 hours/week, and is ideal for people with private practices or other jobs who want to re-engage in the justice work of supporting non-dominant clinicians.

Brave Space recognizes that a predominantly white organization can only go so far in practicing workplace culture that embodies non-dominance, even as we have built strong practices for centering non-dominant gender identities. We are committed to expanding our cohort of powerful colleagues who live and work from a racially non-dominant lens, who want to be a part of building a Brave Space that is life giving and sustainable at the intersections of race and gender. Brave Space is primed to co-create the next evolution of our workplace culture, and we will prove it through daily acts that our policies, practices, and values are open for revision, with the shared value of truly creating a space that sustains the health BIPOC staff and clients.

Join us in building a symbiotic service hub for transgender and non-binary people!
