砍柴挑水 — KANSEI CHŌSUI: chop wood, carry water. It’s a simple expression, often attributed Zen master Hyakujō.

The meaning of the phrase is often interpreted as before enlightenment, chop wood and carry water, and after enlightenment, chop wood and carry water.

All ordinary things must still be done and life moves in the same direction. What truly changes is not the activity itself, but how we become it. Truly transcending both the spiritual and ordinary.

This time of year, the sun rises as we sit zazen on Wednesdays at 6:00 a.m. Sunrise is one of the most ideal times for meditation, as it is conducive to achieving Samadhi. On this particular day, it was also quite cold! 6ºF

Going through some old photos and found these from my 2018 trip to Japan, when I visited Tenryu-ji.

Our Zen lineage traces back to Tenryu-ji and its branch of Rinzai Zen through Zen Master Omori Sogen. Knowing that is one thing—but standing there in person, walking the same grounds, and seeing the same mountains was something else entirely.

Tenryu-ji is a World Heritage site, but for me it was more than a landmark. It was an opportunity to feel the presence of our Zen ancestors and the living thread of practice that continues today.

Tomorrow Sunday, November 9th, Martinez Sensei will offer a short talk on the concept of Kiai — the energetic vitality that lies at the heart of our Zen practice. He will demonstrate how to write Kiai in Zen calligraphy, expressing its spirit through the movement of the brush.

Each participant will receive a small calligraphy piece to take home as a keepsake and reminder of the practice.

This event is open to everyone. No prior experience in meditation or calligraphy is required.

We will have limited space, so please register to attend. DM us to get the link!

At Rhode Island Zen Dojo in East Providence, we integrate the practice of Shodo with Zen, teaching students how to compose, balance, and write with the brush. Through posture, rhythm, speed, and precise brush handling, they create calligraphy that refines their spirit reflecting their state of mind.
