Going through some old photos and found these from my 2018 trip to Japan, when I visited Tenryu-ji.

Our Zen lineage traces back to Tenryu-ji and its branch of Rinzai Zen through Zen Master Omori Sogen. Knowing that is one thing—but standing there in person, walking the same grounds, and seeing the same mountains was something else entirely.

Tenryu-ji is a World Heritage site, but for me it was more than a landmark. It was an opportunity to feel the presence of our Zen ancestors and the living thread of practice that continues today.

We are all set-up for tomorrow’s event: CONVERSATIONS WITH THE BRUSH a monthly event at Rhode Island Zen Dojo:

Tomorrow Sunday, November 9th,  Martinez Sensei will offer a short talk on the concept of Kiai — the energetic vitality that lies at the heart of our Zen practice. He will demonstrate how to write Kiai in Zen calligraphy, expressing its spirit through the movement of the brush.

Each participant will receive a small calligraphy piece to take home as a keepsake and reminder of the practice.

This event is open to everyone. No prior experience in meditation or calligraphy is required.

We will have limited space, so please register to attend. DM us to get the link!

CONVERSATIONS WITH THE BRUSH

Join us for a new monthly event at Rhode Island Zen Dojo: Conversations with the Brush.

On Sunday, November 9th,  Martinez Sensei will offer a short talk on the concept of Kiai — the energetic vitality that lies at the heart of our Zen practice.
