Schools in NY will be implementing a no cell phone policy this year.

After consulting with our pediatric specialists at both Upstate Golisano and Strong Golisano (Rochester) we will be following the AAP (American Academy of Pediatrics) guidance regarding this policy and will not be writing exemption letters regarding cell phones.
While there are some conditions that truly warrant having a cell phone at all times (diabetes, cardiac monitoring) these should be coming directly from the specialist who manages these conditions and the specialists at both institutions have agreed to write these letter on an as-needed basis.

Starting in the 2025-26 school year, New York becomes the largest state to implement comprehensive bell-to-bell cellphone restrictions in all K-12 schools. This isn't about being anti-technology—it's about being pro-childhood.

Spring is here! (we hope!) and with Spring comes allergies, state tests and an increase in critters carrying ticks! Make sure you're doing complete skin checks after playing outside to check for ticks as catching and removing them within 36 hours is key.

If you have a child under 12 months old (young enough they have not gotten the first dose of their MMR), exercise extreme caution with travel. Almost all of the reported measles cases in Texas were in children under age 17 including the first death (a previously healthy but unvaccinated child).

The recent measles outbreaks have many parents concerned. Most of the people who have gotten sick were not vaccinated against measles. This is a stark reminder of the importance of making sure your children are fully vaccinated. Learn more here.

🩺As pediatricians, our life’s work is centered on children’s health.
Even as there are measles outbreaks in Texas and whooping cough outbreaks in PA we are seeing increasing mis-information fuel vaccine hesitancy. We understand! There is a lot of "noise" surrounding vaccines and healthcare in general in the US and so we urge you to follow the facts.

In the late 1800s the average life expectancy was only mid 40s in large part because 25 percent of children did not live past age 5 due to infectious diseases. In 1954 Jonas Salk developed the first inactivated virus vaccine- against polio- and although it was highly effective and sought after (people lined the street to get their children protection against polio), Dr Salk chose to not patent the vaccine or seek any profit from it in order to maximize its global distribution. As a result, polio has been virtually eradicated in any country with access to the vaccine and the last iron lung was decommissioned in 2017 when the patient using it passed away after 70 years on it. Thanks to vaccines, duration and quality of life has changed drastically in the last 70 years and most young people have never seen anyone with polio, tetanus, measles, mumps, or epiglottitis, but that doesn't mean these infections are gone forever...
There is science behind vaccines and vaccine schedules- they are not random, but rather carefully developed, tested and reviewed by pediatric infectious disease experts (immunologists, not politicians). We give vaccines on the schedule in which they were tested and approved to provide children maximum protection when they are at the highest risk (and have the most likelihood of building strong immunity).

If you have questions about vaccines, ask! But get the answers you need from scientific, evidence-based resources such as the AAP, CDC, and your pediatrician!
