A 2025 study published in AJOG adds powerful, up-to-date data showing associations between doula care and improved maternal and newborn outcomes.

Key Maternal Outcomes:

More vaginal births after cesarean (VBAC): For every 100 patients who received doula care, there were 15 to 34 additional VBACs compared with those without doula care.

Higher postpartum follow-up attendance: 5 to 6 more per 100 received postpartum office visits.

Key Neonatal / Infant Outcomes

Increased exclusive breastfeeding rates: Babies whose families had doula support were more likely to breastfeed exclusively.

Fewer preterm births (and early preterm births): Doula-supported births showed a reduction in preterm birth rates.

In short, the study links doula care with improvements in birth outcomes — across birth mode (more VBACs), infant health (less prematurity), and early infant care (breastfeeding, postpartum follow-up).

It’s easy to focus on pregnancy and the newborn and forget that older kids are navigating a big change too. That’s where doulas can step in to support your whole family. They can:

• Suggest ways for them to safely participate in caring for the baby
• Model language and strategies to help kids express big feelings about the new sibling
• Give parents guidance on how they can respond calmly during overwhelming moments

“WHO strongly recommends supporting women to have a chosen companion during labor and childbirth.”📣

The evidence is undisputed about the benefits of having that emotional, psychological, and practical support during labor and childbirth; benefits that include a shorter length of time in labor, decreased caesarean section rates, and more positive health indicators for babies in the first five minutes after birth.

Companions can:

👉🏿 bridge communication gaps between laboring patients and their healthcare team,
👉🏽 offer massage or hand-holding to help relieve pain, and
👉🏻 provide reassurance to help the person in labor feel in control.

And as an advocate, a labor companion can also witness and safeguard against mistreatment or neglect❗️

The World Health Organization (WHO) urges global actors to professional organizations and healthcare providers to community networks and women's groups to play a role in advocating for labor companions.

And couldn’t agree more.💪🏽
