In medical school, we aren’t taught there are ways to prevent Alzheimer’s disease, when in fact we have a lot of power over the direction our brain function will take. However, we’re now learning that the disease actually starts in the brain 20 to 30 years before the first signs of memory loss!

This is why we should all be thinking about prevention.

I was recently joined by Dr. Richard Isaacson on The Doctor’s Farmacy to talk about the brain-healthy choices his research has uncovered and he shares what kinds of benefits different interventions can provide.

We also talk about Dr. Isaacson’s study that investigated twenty-one specific things that can be done to reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s, but he shares that fifty different interventions have actually been identified. He also explains that women are at a higher risk of Alzheimer’s and why that might be.

The truth is, dementia is a very big problem that’s becoming bigger every day.

What’s the link between Alzheimer’s and diabetes?

Well, new research shows insulin resistance, or what I call diabesity (from eating too many carbs and sugar and not enough fat) is one of the major factors that starts the brain-damage cascade, which robs the memory of over half the people in their 80s, leading to a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease.

Here’s the bad news/good news.

Eating sugar and refined carbs can cause pre-dementia and dementia. But cutting out the sugar and refined carbs and adding lots of fat can prevent, and even reverse, pre-dementia and early dementia. Sugar causes pre-diabetes and diabetes, which often leads to significant memory loss.

Chronic stress takes a toll on your body and brain. Stress shrinks the hippocampus, the memory center of the brain. So, find your pause button every day and make time for some stress relief. Relaxation isn’t a luxury if you want to prevent or reverse dementia. Whether that involves deep breathing, meditation, or yoga, find something that helps you calm down.

Lack of sleep can cause impaired brain function, leading to CRAFT syndrome, which stands for “can’t remember a _____ thing.” Studies show poor sleep becomes a risk factor for cognitive decline and Alzheimer’s disease. Aim for at least 8 hours of quality sleep every night.
⁣⁣⁣
We now know that physical activity can prevent and even slow down the progression of cognitive decline and brain diseases like dementia. Even a 30-minute walk can help. More active readers might want to incorporate high-intensity interval training or weight lifting.

➡️CDHD Testing Site in the Town Toyota Center parking lot: Open for all symptomatic patients, and pre-registration is required.

CVCH OFFERS ANTIBODY TREATMENT FOR COVID-19

On October 6, CVCH, launched an antibody treatment for COVID-19 that decreases the likelihood of needing hospitalization by almost 70%. This new treatment is “monoclonal antibody therapy” or “mAb therapy”.

Monoclonal antibodies are man-made proteins that help the body’s immune systems fight off harmful viruses. This treatment can hasten recovery from COVID by increasing a patient’s immunity against the COVID virus.

“After receiving this treatment, there is a 70% decrease in the likelihood of needing to be hospitalized or dying from COVID; we believe this antibody treatment will save lives,” said CVCH CMO, Dr. Malcolm Butler. “As in any battle, the secret is to overwhelm the enemy early in the fight, before they can cause too much damage or reinforce their position. The same is true in the use of mAb therapy. We need to administer these antibodies to patients with COVID as soon as possible after testing positive to overwhelm the virus before it has a chance to reproduce and create havoc within the body.”

"The patients CVCH has treated with monoclonal antibodies were at high risk of experiencing severe COVID symptoms that could lead to hospitalization,” said CVCH Clinical Compliance Director, Marissa Smith. “Most patients who have received this treatment began feeling better within 2 to 3 days and were not hospitalized."

The capacity to provide mAb treatment at this time is limited. Ideal candidates for mAb therapy are patients who are at high risk and have been exposed to or tested positive for COVID. If candidates receive treatment within 10 days of symptom presentation the likelihood of getting seriously ill can be reduced by up to 70%. CVCH Community Relations Manager, Katie Grove reported, “In the Wenatchee area these injections are provided at the CVCH location at 900 Eastmont in East Wenatchee.” If you are at high risk and have early COVID-like symptoms, or have recently tested positive for COVID, please contact your medical provider to see if you are a good candidate for this treatment.
