Our Story - Eastern Services & Camp Simon
In 1980, Mr. K. Simon and his family settled in East Windsor, CT after a long and difficult journey from Laos, Thailand and California.
In the summer of 1983 Mr. Simon “borrowed” the grassy field from the local church to teach his 9 children and the neighborhood kids the fine art of tennis and volleyball. The number of kids grew with each passing summer. Mr. Simon got the kids engaged in teamwork and friendship; he took time to encourage his students to make positive choices and to find their “purpose in life.” For the next 25 years, he freely gave his time, knowledge and support to the neighborhood kids. These kids grew up; many went to college and graduated from school, and other started their own families. On February 10, 2005, Mr. Simon passed away surrounded by his family and friends.
In May of 2005, his children and former students met to celebrate Mr. Simon’s life. Many of his former students had found their “purpose” parents, teachers, nurses, firemen, entrepreneurs, social workers, doctors, and other helping professionals. They credited Mr. Simon’s summer games and guidance as major factors in their personal and professional development. Their fond reminiscing of their summers as kids fostered an idea for future kids to experience Mr. Simon’s summer camp.
In late June 2005, Camp Simon was formally established in honor of Mr. Simon.
