For , LVHN is honoring the theme "African Americans and Labor," recognizing the remarkable contributions African Americans have made across various sectors, including industry, health care, and social justice. This year also commemorates the 100th anniversary of the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters and Maids, led by A. Philip Randolph, a pivotal moment in labor history.

Modern health care has been revolutionized by Black inventors like Dr. Charles Drew, Dr. Patricia Bath, and Otis Boykin. Their innovations in blood banking, cataract surgery, and pacemaker technology have saved countless lives. Vivien Thomas's work in heart surgery paved the way for modern cardiac care.

This month, LVHN colleagues will share personal stories reflecting on how this theme resonates with their lives and careers. Stay tuned for their stories on our social channels and share your own insights on this year's theme in the comments.

"I was raised in a family that valued service to others, and as a fifth-generation veteran, that legacy of service runs deep. My journey in health care began at 14, when I started volunteering as an emergency medical services (EMS) responder in my community. At 18, I joined the U.S. Air Force, where I served for 20 years in both active duty and reserves, as both an enlisted member and officer. During my time in the military, I served in Panama, Desert Storm and Bosnia. I had the privilege of traveling to many places and witnessing communities with little to no outside support. Seeing this strengthened my commitment to serve others in any way I could.

After returning home, I continued to serve my community as an EMS volunteer for many years. Today, I volunteer with the Eastern Pennsylvania Disaster Response Team as a registered nurse. Throughout my time in both the military and civilian life, one thing has become clear to me: Every person has a story, family and loved ones, with both good and challenging days. I feel it’s a privilege to help others when they need it most, and the rewards of service are too great to fully describe." – Thomas Evans, RN, Emergency Department

🇺🇸 🙏 Today, we honor the incredible veterans who have served our nation and now serve our community with the same dedication and courage. We’re proud to work alongside colleagues whose journeys through military service have enriched their compassion, resilience, and commitment to caring for others. From deployment overseas to the halls of our health care facilities, their stories inspire us every day. Thank you to all veterans for your service, your sacrifices and your continued commitment to making a difference. Read more colleague narratives: https://bit.ly/3Arq6HH.
