I was lucky enough to get back into things and take a course at the Ayurvedic Center of Vermont this weekend. What an amazing experience to be around new and old female friends to learn more about the sacred yoni. This womb healing course was not only helpful for my clients but it also allowed me to have insight and connection with my own body.

If you’re going crazy without what feels like your normal routine right now, you aren’t alone. The good news is, Ayurveda is here to help! Take this time to work on yourself! Following the different times of the day makes starting your own routine really easy. This isn’t me saying, wake up, work out, change your life drastically. Take what you want from any tips and pointers I give. This is just to help bring some stability and schedule into your life during a time of dissociation and isolation.
According to Dr. Vasant Lad, our daily routine is the best way to prevent illness at this time.
Okay, so let’s start by just a little rundown of the different times of the day. In the picture you see there’s Vata, Pitta and Kapha times of the day. Without getting into too much of it, just know that these different times of the day and the ā€œdoshaā€ (vata, pitta or kapha) that goes along with that time of the day plays a huge role about what you should be doing during that time and it’s a HUGE help.
Alrighty, so let’s start from waking up to going to bed. Vata time is when we should be waking up, 2-6am; ideally we would like to rise around the same time the sun rises. Trust me, it’s beautiful and worth it. First thing you should do when you wake up: go to the bathroom, brush your teeth, tongue scrape, then throw on a pot to boil some hot water. The first thing you want to ingest when you wake up is some hot/warm water, ESPECIALLY during this time. It’s an EASY way to help prevent illness during this time. Warm water is cleansing, helps spark up your agni (digestive fire) for the day and it also it’s great for your respiratory system as well as blood flow throughout the body (if you look up warm water benefits you’ll find so many). Warm water should also be drank all throughout the day, especially at this time... cold water is never really a good option to begin with. After you have some warm water and maybe some tea. Vata time is a time for sense care.. taking care of our sense organs. Mouth, eyes, nose, eyes. I find it really helpful to spray rose water in my eyes when I wake up!
Okay, now that we have taken care of ourselves, time to get moving; it’s Kapha time (6am-10am)! Let’s start with some pranayama exercises (breathing techniques). Dr. Lad suggested that during this COVID pandemic that we start with a series of 8 pranayamas (breath techniques) that are shown to strengthen the immune system, respiratory system and the lymphatic system, as well as clean and boost our energy level all while balancing ojas, tejas, and prana (our vigor, our internal flame, and our life force).
Bhastrika (bellows breath)
Kapalabhati (skull shining breath)
Anuloma Viloma (alternate nostril w/retention)
Ujai
Ugjeet
Sh*tali - cooling breath
Sitcari - cooling breath
Bramari-bumble bee breath
After some pranayama, do some yoga. Even just a few easy poses.. get your blood moving. If you work out, now would be the time to do your workout routine. Start/continue/deepen your practice while you have the time! After you get done movin’ your body around, try meditating!! Even if it’s just for a few minutes. Then sit quietly afterwards and just be aware.
Okay, now that we are feeling pretty accomplished at this point, let us eat breakfast šŸ™‚ Nothing big during this time, that comes later! Oatmeal, buckwheat cereal, breakfast soup.. all these are good breakfast ideas right now since we are actually in the kapha season! Kapha is heavy, damp, dense, static... think of water & earth (which kapha is made up of).. it’s rainy all the time and the earth is heavy!! So we don’t want to eat yogurt or any/a lot of dairy during this time.. [if you have questions about what to eat during this time just message me!!!] After breakfast is the ideal time to take something like Chyavanprash (Ayurvedic herbal jam) to help give your immune system some support during this crazy time of illness. Just a teaspoon will do! I take it and it’s amazing. There are other jams out there, like with anything, just ask me!!! Alrighty, so now it’s time for any focused work you have to get done. If you’re working from home, this is when your grounded and ready to focus on anything that may need your attention.
Cool, it’s 10am, we are coming into Pitta time of the day (10am-2pm), and you’ve gotten done basically everything that you wanted to get outta the way. Pitta is the fire element, fire is transformative and is able to digest!!!! So, it would be during this time that you take the time to prepare a nice big lunch for yourself and who ever you maybe with. Lunch should be your biggest meal; when the sun is at its highest point in the sky, burning brightly, so is your internal flame (Agni) and we are able to digest the best at this time! šŸ™‚ cool huh?! Whip up some tofu tacos (or naturally raised meat tacos if you eat meat), prepare an Indian meal with some herbs and spices, a veggie soup, or a hummus and veggie or chicken wrap! If you’re a hungry person that likes food (*ahem*), nows your time to shine! After you eat a meal, especially a big one, it’s always a good idea to lay on your left side for about 10-20 minutes to help your food digest properly (or as me and my fellow kripalu KSA students call it, L*D- left side down). Nows a nice time to go take a walk as well, especially during this season.. the sun isn’t too hot and it’s a nice time to get out of the house, even just walk down your road, feel some sunlight on your face. Sometimes this is an ideal time to do anything that takes ā€œdigestingā€. Maybe this means communication with other people, or reading material, studying.
Next up is Vata time again (2-6pm) and your heavy lunch that you so beautifully digested is now helping your nervous system with the fuel that your body needed for the rest of your day to focus. Take this time to get done whatever else you have left to get done. Some cleaning, finishing up your work day, conversations with family and loved ones, or take this time to do something creative!! Vata loves communication and creativity. Play a game, paint a picture, start/continue a DIY project, do a puzzle... this is the time to do it!
Kapha time is up again (6-10pm). We are winding down now... throw in the leave in conditioner, cook yourself a light supper...carrot and ginger soup with some roasted chickpeas or some white bean and artichoke croquettes (thank you Kate O’Donnell!!!!). Then give yourself a nice oil massage; it’s time to relax and recharge before Pitta time comes...
Lastly, the day is over and it’s Pitta time (10pm-2am) and it’s time to hit the hay. Be in bed with a book by this time, take the time to maybe journal or write about your day. Try to fall asleep at least two hours after sunset (I know this can be hard, but we are all stuck at home with not much to do, so why not give it a try if you can?!)
I hope you’ve found this a little helpful. Once again if you have questions about anything feel free to message me about anything I’ve mentioned, or anything at all šŸ™‚. I hope safety and health finds everyone. Love and light. Namaste šŸ’—

Normally you’ll never see ice in my drink; Ayurvedic texts say that cold foods and beverages slow down and hinder the digestive process.
But on a day as hot as this, I can’t resist. Plus, I ate buffalo cauliflower yesterday and my insides are on fire!
So today I went out to the garden, picked myself a cucumber and some tomato; cut up an avocado, added some lemon and olive oil... and there’s my meals for the day!
I really need cooling, nurturing foods today in this weather (and especially after what I ate yesterday).
✨✨✨✨✨
When do you sometimes bend the rules?
Does your body sometimes scream for iced tea or maybe a dark chocolate candy bar?
✨✨
I’m a firm believer in going by the way my body feels to create balance rather than just look to my doshic makeup to decide my diet.
✨✨✨

Krysten

Late post ✨ •
Beyond excited to announce that after months of training, hours of instruction, in-person and online classes during crazy Covid, I am officially a Ayurvedic Health Counselor. Dean and assistant really pulled through for KSA 15 by quickly putting together an online course for our class after the pandemic took over. I was SO impressed by their determination for our class. I couldn’t be more blessed to have been taught by teachers such as Dr. Rosy, .ayurveda Dr. Anusha and many others. The wisdom that they passed on to me has changed my life entirely; words can’t even describe the knowledge that I will cherish for my entire life. šŸ™šŸ¼ā€¢
•
I need to thank my grandparents and for putting me through school and to my mother for bringing me to and opening my eyes to the world of & lastly to my boyfriend for being so supportive in my lifestyle & career changes 🄰 •
•
Anyway, just wanted to share my happiness with everyone on here. It’s a huge milestone in my life. I’d even say it’s more important than graduating from my university with a bachelors degree. šŸ’• •
I found my path, a path that will never end and will continue to transform my life and open my eyes to the beauty that this earth and life has given us all. šŸŒ±ā€¢

Ayurveda and Your Relationship with Food & Body Image••
Quarantine has caused massive changes for all of us. From having a lot more downtime, opportunities to cook and no means of gym time, weight gain has been a given for a lot of us.
On a personal note, I used to struggle a lot more with my body image. I’m a Pitta Kapha, a small athletic frame with lots of curves. I can lose and gain weight pretty easily. And my love affair with food? Total foodie. So my relationship with my body and with food has been put through a test. Thankfully, there’s Ayurveda. 🌱
I’ve learned to listen to the gunas of my body. If I’m feeling heavy I eat something light. When the suns out and I’m feeling a little heat in my body I go with cucumber salad or some fruit. When I pay close attention to the qualities of not only my body, but my mind as well; I learn what my body reallyyy needs. I can become tamasic at times, lazy and feelings of depression sometimes like to sneak up on me, especially at times when I can see my body changing.
Being aware of gunas has been SUCH a huge help for me during this time. Pay close attention to how your feeling in your mind and in your body. React with the opposite to accomplish balance.

Krysten šŸ’•

A poem written in 1869 by Kathleen O’Meara after a plague devastated Ireland in the 1860’s. It’s absolutely beautiful and fits perfectly with the world today. //

And people stayed home
and read books and listened
and rested and exercised
and made art and played
and learned new ways of being
and stopped
and listened deeper

someone meditated
someone prayed
someone danced
someone met their shadow

and people began to think differently
and people healed
and in the absence of people who lived in ignorant ways,
dangerous, meaningless and heartless,
even the earth began to heal

and when the danger ended
and people found each other
grieved for the dead people
and they made new choices
and dreamed of new visions
and created new ways of life
and healed the earth completely
just as they were healed themselves.

04/28/2020

Especially during this season, you can wake up and feel completely influenced by the weather. One day you wake up and it’s raining outside and the next day it’s sunny and warm. I don’t know about you, but when I wake up and it’s raining I feel pretty lazy. I don’t feel the push to get things done and I don’t feel as creative either. Yesterday I just wanted to lay around all day and read. Today I woke up and without even realizing it, I immediately came up with another idea for money, hopped out of bed, got dressed and hit the store to get things done. I even cleaned the house up a little bit. I felt more inspired today totally. Realizing how beautiful it is outside, I had an ā€œahaā€ moment (this always happens now that I relate everything to Ayurveda). It’s sunny out and that’s a huge reason why I feel so creative and energized! And even though this is the time of the month when I should be relaxing a bit more, I can’t help but to take advantage of the day.
So if you’re feeling a little all over the place, emotion wise, don’t think you’re nuts! You aren’t alone. Your external environment has so much to do with the way you’re feeling. The weather is different almost everyday as we get closer to a new season. Remember, you are a microcosm part of the macrocosm; we adapt and change when our environment changes.

Woke up with some kapha in my chest and face (cough and sneezes). This ginger carrot soup with roasted chick peas will do just the trick. The dryness from the chickpeas plus the ginger will dry up that mucus-y moist kapha that’s accumulating in my body during this kapha season.

It’s amazing by the way. I don’t even like carrots but mixed with fresh ginger (and I added some fresh black pepper) it’s amazing. And I love some crunch in my soup...the chickpeas hit the spot!

My Story

Sattva Wellness is a private practice focused on holistic healthcare. I am a Kripalu Certified Ayurvedic Health Counselor as of 2020. My job is to address your main health concerns and give you advice and ways to live your life in a more balanced state. Instead of prescriptions and medicine, I go over diet and lifestyle and work with you to bring you back into a state of balance within yourself. Each consultation is individualized for you and your needs. I believe strongly in the prevention of illness and getting to the root cause of your health concerns rather than just a temporary fix.
