Chase Brexton Health Care proudly celebrates National Hispanic Heritage Month.
National Hispanic Heritage Month (NHHM), observed September 15 – October 15, calls us to celebrate the rich history, culture, and achievements of Hispanic Americans.
The observance acknowledges those whose ancestors descend from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, Central America, and South America. Significant to the timeframe of the observance are the independence anniversaries of Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Nicaragua, and Honduras (September 15), Mexico (September 16), Chile (September 18), and Belize (September 21).
In June 1968, National Hispanic Heritage Week was introduced by Congressman George E. Brown who represented areas of East Los Angeles which were and remain rich with Latino influence. By September 1968, after Congress passed Public Law 90-498 which requested the president declare September 15 and 16 the beginning of National Hispanic Heritage Week, President Lyndon Johnson signed the legislation. In August 1988, under President Ronald Reagan, the legislation was expanded into a month-long observance from September 15 – October 15 and enacted into law by approval of Public Law 100-402. In September 1989, President George H.W. Bush officially proclaimed the month-long celebration.
This year’s NHHM theme, “Collective Heritage: Honoring the Past, Inspiring the Future,” speaks to Chase Brexton’s values and the heart of what we do on a daily basis.
