Varicose veins can be unsightly, but they can also cause pain and discomfort.

Most women are familiar with varicose veins, because they're so common during and after pregnancy. Weight gain puts pressure on the veins in the lower body, causing them to weaken and lose their elasticity. This causes blood to pool in the veins, causing them to enlarge and push closer to the skin. Other factors can cause varicose veins too, like genetics, obesity, standing for long periods on a daily basis, aging, and circulatory disorders.

For many people, varicose veins don't cause any real health problems. But if they begin to ache, itch, burn, throb, darken, are tender, or bleed, you should see us for an appointment immediately. Depending on your condition, you may find relief with at-home treatments or you may need a medical procedure.

PA Foot & Ankle associates specialize in varicose veins treatment in the Allentown, PA 18104 and 18102, Easton, PA 18042 and Northampton, PA 18067 areas.

After a certain age it can be a problem cutting thickened toenails. Those basic toenail clippers and files can't get the job done anymore and they might do harm to your nail or toe because of your less-than-great eyesight and the way you have to struggle to get the thick nail cut.

It's safest to "have your nails done" during your next appointment with us. In between appointments, consider using some different tools to get the job done.

A large toenail clippers with long handles which are easier to use if you have arthritis. Many of these are also engineered to cut ingrown and thick, irregular nails with ease.
A podiatry-grade toenail clipper with a jaw that opens over 1 inch wide, ideal for very thick nails.
An electric toenail grinder which is good for effortless trimming and literally sanding down the rough edges.

You might think that toenail fungus is strictly for elderly people. The truth is, toenail fungus can infect just about anyone's toes.

At any age, the people most likely to develop a fungal infection in their toenails are those who spend a lot of time in warm, moist environments like locker rooms, pool decks, and sweaty shoes. And this might surprise you, but the types of fungus that infect your toes and nails is contagious, and is spread by direct contact or shared items like clippers and towels. That also includes the floor of your gym's shower area. Even a minor case of athlete's foot can spread to your toenails.

To avoid picking up a toenail infection:

Keep your feet clean and dry, especially after visiting public, damp areas.
Wear flip flops in communal showers.
Trim your toenails straight across and disinfect the clippers.
Use antifungal spray or powder in your shoes

Sometimes toenail fungus is very difficult to get rid of, so as they say, an ounce of prevention....

If you’re over 50, you might be surprised - or even frustrated - by what’s happening below your knees. As we age, our feet naturally change, and it’s important to pay attention to those shifts, especially if you have diabetes, live a sedentary lifestyle, smoke, or have circulation problems. Genetics and past injuries can also affect the way your tendons, ligaments, and bones work together, leading to pain, discomfort, numbness, fungal infections, dry skin, and other issues.

It's important that we take care of our feet, because we'll need them for the rest of our lives. Wear comfortable footwear, moisturize, dry your feet completely after washing, and see us for regular checkups to monitor your foot health and conditions like diabetic neuropathy.
