The Achilles tendon is the largest tendon in your child's body. It connects the calf muscles to the heel.

Achilles tendinitis is a very common problem with kids, especially those who are active. A bad case can be extraordinarily painful.

Causes: Overuse and repetitive stress, a sudden increase in activity levels, improper footwear, flat feet, and growth spurts.

Symptoms: Pain and tenderness in the back of the heel, especially after activities, swelling and stiffness, difficulty walking or running, or a popping sound when bending the ankle.

It's important that you see us if you child experiences any of these symptoms, as Achilles tendinitis left untreated can cause lasting damage to the tendon.

Are "growing pains" in kids feet and legs real?

Absolutely. But they usually don't indicate a serious problem. And they're not related to growing.

Doctors used to believe that the common complaint of an aching or cramping feeling in a child's legs were due to growth spurts of bones and muscles. We know that's not true now, but the name stuck.

"Growing pains" usually occur after a very active day, when the muscles and joints have been overused. The cure is a good night's rest.

But if your child complains frequently of aching or cramping in their legs, even when they're not active, it could be caused by flat feet, scoliosis, Vitamin D deficiency or low bone density.

So if your child complains frequently of "growing pains", get in touch with us for an evaluation. We'll let you know if it's nothing to worry about or a sign of a problem that needs medical attention.

How can you tell the difference between when your child has a sprain or a fracture of their foot, ankle or lower leg?

Unless you're a trained medical pro, you can't.

The symptoms of a sprain or fracture can be similar: pain, swelling, bruising, tenderness, and difficulty with movement or bearing weight.

The only way to know for sure is with x-rays and a consultation with one of our podiatrists.

If you spot your child with any of these symptoms, see us right away, as an untreated sprain or fracture can have immediate and long-term complications.

know all too well that their kids' feet grow quickly and it may be hard to keep up with what their proper shoe size is. But in the wrong size can cause a variety of foot problems, including , , , , and ingrown toenails.

If your child complains of foot pain, it could be caused by old shoes that are too tight, or even new shoes that are too loose. Make sure to measure your child's feet every few months and ensure that they have properly sized shoes.

If their foot pain continues after a shoe upgrade, please see us at once for an evaluation to avoid any long-term problems.
