Today is World Diabetes Day. This year's focus is "Diabetes and the workplace". With appropriate access and care, everyone with diabetes has the chance to live well.

In the workplace, a person with diabetes may encounter false assumptions about their condition, including blame. This can cause a lack of confidence in those with diabetes, leading to missed medical appointments and negative perceptions in their workplace.

We want fewer people living with diabetes to experience:

more empowerment
better health outcomes
fewer days in the hospital
more research investment
new treatments
better care

November is National Diabetes Awareness Month.

One of the many consequences of is reduced blood flow and sensation in your feet and lower legs. This is due to nerve and blood vessel damage from long-term high blood sugar. Because there is less blood flow, when you get a sore or cut on your foot, it's slower to heal, which opens the door to infection. If not controlled, infection can quickly lead to amputation of a toe or portion of your foot.

If you have diabetes, do a foot check once each day - look for abrasions, open sores, or cuts, and rinse and bandage them right away. If the sore or wound lasts more than a week, or if it looks infected, make an appointment to see us right away before it gets worse.

One of the long-term consequences of diabetes is Diabetic Neuropathy - nerve damage caused by high blood sugar levels. This affects your legs and feet, causing numbness, tingling, burning pain, or a loss of sensation. Over time, diabetic neuropathy can lead to serious complications like foot ulcers, infections, and even amputation if not managed properly.

If you're diabetic, you should have a neuropathy check annually to see if it's developing, and if you do have neuropathy, it's important to monitor its progress.

See us for a diabetic foot check today!
