I’ve treated many people with personality disorders who were turned away by other therapists. Those therapists were unwilling to treat them because they were afraid of the diagnosis. They didn’t feel equipped to work with these highly stigmatized disorders. There is a lack of deeper awareness in the mental health field around what personality disorders actually are.
Personality disorders are actually symptoms: Black + white thinking, mood swings, intense rage or anger, feelings of intense loneliness or doom, trouble in relationships, inability to cope or deal with stress, intrusive/racing thoughts are all common.
When we are raised in unsafe environments, we adapt.
We find ways to feel safe. If we didn’t have secure attachment (safe relationships with parent figures) as children, we develop symptoms of attachment trauma.
There is a dysregulation of the nervous system. This is why mood swings are so common— there’s a near constant fight or flight response. Emotions flood quickly + intensely. People with personality disorders don’t feel safe in their bodies.
They’re hypervigilant (always scanning the environment for threats.) Or feeling they’ll be abandoned. Sometimes this is labeled as paranoia.
That nervous system response also causes obsessive thinking + “extreme” emotional reactions. Living with a personality disorder means there can trauma responses to “little” things throughout the day.
Many people numb, dissociate, use s*x, alcohol or other substances to escape the lack of safety they feel their bodies. When you’re in a near constant state of fight or flight, you’ll find ways to (immediately) regulate even if they cause more pain or suffering in the long term.
If you’ve been diagnosed or experience these symptoms, it’s important to be aware that you’ve adapted. You probably push people away, say things you don’t mean, shame yourself for “overreacting,” + feel terrified or overwhelmed in conflict.
You are not a disordered human, you’re a human who feels unsafe. Who’s learned to cope in the best ways you knew how. Who’s resilient + able to return to your body
