Empower+ interns Thomas Redfern, a junior at York College (left), and Jonathan Walsh, a junior at Moravian University (right), dedicated the summer at Good Shepherd to design and 3D-print innovative assistive devices tailored to meet diverse patient needs.

"The 3D printing internships provided an opportunity for the students to gain valuable experience in a real-world setting and we were able to learn from them as they bring a different area of expertise," said Amanda Clark, director of Good Shepherd Creates. โ€œIt has allowed for process improvement initiatives to streamline our operations, accelerate the quality and quantity of designs, and create even more meaningful change for our clinicians and patients."

Thomas and Jonathan created numerous devices during the internship, including:

๐Ÿ‘Ÿ Adaptive grip that attaches to a treadmill for additional wrist and hand support for those with impaired hand function

๐ŸŽ’ Device prototype to stabilize feeding bags placed inside backpacks to allow pediatric patients to remain mobile while receiving nutrition

๐Ÿ’ช Arm skate with an adjustable height, allowing for smoother rolling across a tabletop surface

๐Ÿซฑ Device that adapts a standard spray bottle, allowing it to be operated in a pushing motion for individuals who may struggle with traditional squeezing mechanisms

Thank you, Thomas and Jonathan!

Isaiah Natale, 26, an aspiring inspirational speaker and resident at Good Shepherd Home - Raker Center, experienced more tragedy and trauma in his young life than many people do in their lifetimes.

Today, he tells his stirring personal story to a variety of crowds in and around the Lehigh Valley, including at Good Shepherd's orientation for new hires.

"I thought, what better way to connect with people than to become an inspirational speaker so that people can relate to my story or be inspired to make a change in their life," Isaiah said.

"I want people to know that they are not alone โ€” that we all go through things."

๐Ÿ˜€ Meet Hadley, a determined little superstar with Costello Syndrome, whoโ€™s never shy about sharing her thoughts or fashion opinions. Hadley may face motor delays, muscle tightness and posture challenges, but that hasnโ€™t stopped her from chasing her goals.

Recently, Hadley wrapped Week 6 of serial casting (a non-invasive way to stretch tight muscles) and has already gained a whopping 44 degrees of knee extension โ€” a huge achievement.

Her favorite part? Picking a new color wrap each week and making sure her Good Shepherd therapists wear gloves while working with the casting material. Hadley runs the show.

Serial casting might sound intense, but for Hadley, she has tolerated the process well, and itโ€™s all part of the fun on her journey to walking more confidently in her gait trainer and achieving her standing play goals! ๐Ÿ’ฅ๐Ÿ‘ฃ

At Palmer Township, Justin Adadey works on high-intensity gait training with dual-tasking in the therapy gym, guided by Physical Therapist Bailey Brugler. Justin simulates talking on the phone, a task he may encounter in the community. His goal is to walk faster so he can engage in outdoor activities and sports with his brothers. Adding weights to the training enhances muscle strength, sequencing and overall community mobility for better carryover into daily life.
