Reading aloud is one of the simplest and most powerful ways to support your child’s growth and development. It builds language, sparks imagination, and nurtures a love for learning that can last a lifetime.

From newborns to older children, every read-aloud moment is an opportunity to connect, create memories, and open the door to new adventures.

We are sharing another powerful reminder from Ms. Mya Ndiaye!

Self-reflection is essential for effective treatment and lasting growth. Recognizing our own imbalances helps us cultivate the awareness needed for truly inclusive care. Equally important is knowing when to ask for help and when to offer support using our cultural knowledge.

This mindset strengthens our commitment to serve every individual with respect and understanding.

Using rewards can help kids with autism feel more confident and less anxious. When they know something fun or positive is coming, they’re more likely to try new things and build important skills. The goal is to focus on progress, not perfection!

Children who are nonverbal can benefit from ABA therapy methods that support communication in ways that work for them. If you care for or work with a nonverbal child on the autism spectrum, here are some helpful techniques:

- Use visual supports like picture cards or communication boards
- Encourage gestures or basic sign language
- Try music, movement, or play-based activities to build connection
- Use assistive technology like speech-generating devices
- Narrate your actions and model simple language throughout the day

Sharing another important insight from our founder, Ms. Mya Ndiaye.

The stigma surrounding mental illness for Black men in the United States is deeply rooted in misconceptions, limited access to care, harmful stereotypes, historical injustices, and societal expectations of strength.

These factors create barriers that make it harder for Black men to seek the support they deserve and contribute to ongoing discrimination and silence.

Overcoming this stigma means recognizing these challenges and working together to build a more inclusive, understanding, and supportive community where mental health is prioritized for everyone.

Let’s change the narrative and break the stigma.

At B.E.L.I.E.F. Eclectic Learning, we recognize how powerful effective communication strategies can be when supporting children with Autism Spectrum Disorder. One evidence-based tool we often use is social stories.

Social stories are short, personalized narratives that help children better understand social situations, manage behavior, and build important social-emotional skills.

Here are a few tips for using social stories with your child:
✔ Focus on a specific situation – Choose something your child finds challenging, like going to the doctor or sharing during playtime.
✔ Keep it clear and relatable – Use simple language, visuals, and examples that reflect your child’s world.
✔ Review it regularly – Read the story with your child often, especially before the situation arises.
✔ Celebrate progress – Reinforce the story by praising your child when they use the behavior or skill in real life.

We’re here to support families with practical, research-based strategies like these. Reach out to B.E.L.I.E.F. Eclectic Learning to learn more about how we can help your child thrive.

Why do behaviors happen? Understanding the Four Functions of Behavior is key to supporting children with autism in meaningful ways:

🔹 Access to Tangibles – Wanting a specific item or activity
🔹 Attention – Seeking interaction or response from others
🔹 Escape – Trying to avoid or get away from something
🔹 Sensory/Self-Stimulation – Engaging in a behavior because it feels good or meets a sensory need

At Open Door Living Association, Inc. and B.E.L.I.E.F. Eclectic Learning, we know that the best strategy for addressing behavior is being proactive, not reactive. By identifying why a behavior is happening, we can create personalized and effective ABA interventions that truly support each child’s needs.
