Shoulder pain is a very common problem. A recent Finnish study using MRI found that 99% of adult test subjects (602 people, ages 41-76) had at least one rotator cuff abnormality. That doesn't mean they were all in pain, but it does mean that shoulder abnormalities are nearly universal after the age of 40.

In my office, I see a lot of people that have previously been diagnosed as having a "rotator cuff tendon tear", as if there is only one tendon, but as you can see in this image there are 3 distinct tendons in the rotator cuff. I often send these people out for a diagnostic ultrasound to see exactly which tendon is torn, and by how much.

These findings, help dictate whether exercise will help, or cause more damage, which is a very important thing to know.
