The benefits of taking magnesium daily make it essential. Many of us know that it helps with energy and sleep but it has a much larger application as well. Today our diets are inundated with hidden poisons. Dementia and Alzheimer's disease are associated with too much extracellular calcium. Glutamate from MSG, a flavor enhancer in most foods and aspartate an artificial sweetener, have been shown in repeated studies to open up calcium channels in the cell membrane of nerve and brain cells. When this calcium channel opens it floods the cells with calcium resulting in irreversible damage and death to those cells. We blindly take calcium because we are told that it helps build strong bones, but in fact it is deadly and a major contributor to causing Alzheimer's disease. Taking 500 mg of magnesium a day helps block the receptors that open the gate that floods the cell's with calcium. Some studies show that taking 250 mg twice a day is more effective than taking 500 mg all at once.
