I get asked no less than once daily by patients as to why they get repeat episodic vertigo. The literature suggests that ~80% of patients with vertigo do not experience symptom recurrence with proper treatment, (note that proper treatment does not mean meclizine, aka Antivert). I find this to be true. So what about the 20%? Well, we’ve known for some time that vitamin D deficiency is in fact associated with repeat occurrence. I also know that on lab testing, close to 100% of my patients are severely vitamin D deficient. Many of my patients have never even had their vitamin D checked prior to seeing me. Moral of the story is to make sure you get D checked regularly, especially if you suffer from recurrent positional vertigo.

It’s actually hard to believe that the first food pyramid came about 34 years ago. We have known the entire time that this information was contradictory to healthy eating, spanning my entire medical career, meaning we knew the information was wrong when it came out. As such this was a long overdo necessity. Unfortunately, this is only one of many fallacies which are widely accepted. I remain hopeful that this becomes a trend.

Under President Trump’s leadership, common sense, scientific integrity, and accountability have been restored to federal food and health policy.

For decades, the Dietary Guidelines favored corporate interests over common-sense, science-driven advice to improve the health of Americans.

That ends today.

The new Dietary Guidelines call for prioritizing high-quality protein, healthy fats, fruits, vegetables, and whole grains—and avoiding highly processed foods and refined carbohydrates.
