Welcome Dr. Lori Shepherd to our pediatric team at Marshfield Medical Center-Eau Claire.

Dr. Shepherd provides care for newborns through adolescents. This includes well-child visits, sick visits, care for children with special needs and care for chronic or ongoing medical conditions.

“I believe children are the most amazing creatures on earth. I love caring for families and having the privilege of watching them grow," she said.

Her goal is to form a close, respectful, collaborative relationship with families to promote the best care for the child.

On hot summer days, it is important to stay hydrated because dehydration can set in quickly when your body doesn’t have enough fluid.

We mainly lose water through perspiration, urination and excreting bowels. When it’s warmer, you lose more fluid through sweat, making it easier to become dehydrated.

“Among the first symptoms to show up are a dry mouth, less urination, dark-colored urine, fatigue, dizziness, dry skin, headache, muscle cramps or feeling thirsty,” said Lexie Schwartz, RN and Emergency Department Manager at Marshfield Medical Center-Rice Lake. “In babies and children, dehydration can occur quicker due to the smaller body size. Watch for sunken eyes, irritability, and unusual fatigue, crying with no tears, a dry mouth or tongue and less wet diapers than usual.”

We are proud to recognize Registered Nurse Penny Richardson as the July recipient of the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses.

Penny is a Labor and Delivery nurse at Marshfield Medical Center-Eau Claire. She was nominated by a grateful family who experienced her exceptional care during the birth of their son.

From the moment they arrived in the post-birth suites, Penny’s calm, nurturing presence stood out. She not only delivered outstanding clinical care, but also took the time to answer every question, provide comfort, and offer thoughtful touches like one of her special ice packs to ease the new mother’s recovery.

When unexpected complications arose, Penny was a steadfast advocate, offering reassurance and genuine empathy. Her ability to make the family feel safe, supported and truly cared for left a lasting impression.

As the family shared, “Penny treated us like family, and that made all the difference during those emotional first hours of parenthood.”

Before the summer or fall sport season starts, it is important for your kid to have a pre-participation physical examination, or sports physical. The screening will identify underlying areas of concern that may become a risk during the sports season.

It’s encouraged your child’s sports physical be part of their annual well-child visit with their pediatrician or primary care provider. This helps ensure a comprehensive physical exam where the provider can thoroughly assess your child’s overall health and readiness for sports activities.

Marshfield Medical Center-Eau Claire Urgent Care is moving to Marshfield Clinic Oakwood Center on Aug. 18.

Urgent care is available for injuries and illnesses, like minor cuts that need stitches or ear infections, that are not life threatening but need care fast.
