Are you an athlete at risk for RED-S? Here's what you need to know ⬇️

đź’ŞWhat is RED-S?
Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport (RED-S) occurs when your body doesn’t have enough energy available to support both your sport and basic bodily functions.

⛹🏼Who’s affected?
It’s not just females—while RED-S is related to the female athlete triad, it can affect anyone. All athletes, regardless of gender, can experience challenges stemming from energy deficiency.
‼️ Higher risk for athletes in sports that emphasize leanness or aesthetics, including gymnastics, swimming, cross country, and wrestling.

đź«€How does it show up?
Symptoms can vary and may include:
- Menstrual irregularities (in females)
- Low testosterone (in males)
- Mood swings
- Decreased bone density
- GI issues
- Heart rhythm changes

Start by jotting down the food rules you've noticed—big or small. Awareness is a powerful first step.
✔️ Choose Just One to Challenge
Focus on one rule at a time to keep things manageable. Slow and steady builds confidence.
✔️ Break It—and Practice
Whether it’s eating a “forbidden” food or letting go of a rigid behavior, give yourself permission to challenge the rule more than once this week. Repetition helps rewrite old patterns.

Food rules are often internalized beliefs—guidelines, mantras, or principles—that shape a person’s eating habits or relationship with food. Many of these rules stem from diet culture, personal experiences, peer influence, or misinformation. Over time, they can tangle into our thinking, creating feelings of guilt, anxiety about weight changes, and harsh self-judgment.

Common examples might include:
Only eating a certain number of times per day
Avoiding food after 8:00 p.m.
Limiting dessert to once per week
Exercising to “earn” a meal or certain food
Believing that all carbohydrates are “bad”

But here’s the good news: food rules can be unlearned. They can be challenged, reshaped, and released. Try this three-step process:
1. List the Rules
Write them down—big or small, subtle or loud.
2. Choose One
Start with the most impactful rule, or the one that feels most manageable.
3. Break the Rule & Reflect
Gently go against the rule. Let the feelings rise—curiosity, discomfort, even fear. Then check in with your body: What is it asking for? What feels nurturing? Honor that, not the rule.

And if that rule resurfaces? That’s okay. You’re not failing. Revisit the process, be kind to yourself, and remember: healing isn’t linear—it’s a constantly shifting journey of growth.

What is Eating Disorder Relapse?
An eating disorder relapse refers to a return to disordered eating patterns after a period of recovery. Signs of a relapse may include changes in body weight, withdrawal from social settings, or a renewed preoccupation with appearance, clothing, or body image.

Prevention begins with connection. A strong care team—including a therapist, registered dietitian, and trusted loved ones—can provide the foundation for ongoing recovery. From there, tap into a personalized self-care routine that nourishes your well-being. This might involve balanced nutrition, engaging in meaningful activities, and prioritizing practices that help you feel grounded. It’s also helpful to create a plan for navigating challenging situations, with a focus on body neutrality or body positivity.
Remember: healing isn’t linear. Every recovery path is unique, and setbacks don’t erase progress. You’re not alone—we’re here to support you every step of the way!
