What are your areas of interest? Are you specialized in a specific area? “My specialty was in home care for 26 of my 32+ yrs. of practice. I was Fall Prevention Certified by the hospital for which I was employed for 20 years in Illinois. What type of therapist do you aspire to be? “My goal as a PTA is to continue providing quality care for patients, while making it fun.”

What is a fun “non-therapy” fact about you? “Some fun non-PT facts about me are: I love to garden, cook, and listen to music (from the 60’s to present day). I have 63 concert T-shirts because I love to attend concerts. I have a BA in English and Communications from DePaul University in Chicago, which allowed me to work in advertising for 5 years before returning to school to become a PTA. I never have watched the show Mad Men because I lived it!”

Where did you obtain your degree? “I earned my bachelor’s degree in communication sciences and disorders from Saint Cloud State University in 2015 and master’s degree from the University of Minnesota Duluth in 2017.”

What made you want to become an SLP? “From a young age, I always had a passion for helping others. Through community volunteering and shadowing different professions, speech pathology was something that grabbed my attention – largely because of their mission to help individuals participate in one of the most fundamental things to humankind – communication.”

What are your areas of interest? Are you specialized in a specific area? “I enjoy speech pathology’s large depth of field, but I have a special interest in treating swallowing disorders and conducting caregiver dementia education. I am a Certified SPEAK OUT! Provider (a program designed to help people with Parkinson’s and related neurological disorders regain and retain their speech and swallowing) and enjoy the educational side of being a speech pathologist.”

What type of therapist do you aspire to be? “I aspire to be a compassionate therapist and servant leader who operates with integrity. I enjoy taking the time to really get to know my patients and their caregivers so that I can ensure I am providing them with the most beneficial therapy and resources applicable to their unique situation. What is a fun “non-therapy” fact about you? “A fun non-therapy fact about me is that my husband and I have two little boys (5 yrs. and 2 yrs.), a dog named Milo, and a cat named Finnegan that keep us very busy. In light of National Speech-Language-Hearing Month, meet Trenton Mannetter – one of our Speech-Language Pathologists!

Where did you obtain your degree? “I received my B.A. in Psychology in 2015 at UW-Madison (Go Badgers!). I initially was planning to complete post-graduate training counseling psychology. However, I became really interested in the Speech-Language Pathology field after taking an advanced-level phonetics course in the Spanish department and learning more about the profession from in that class. From there, I received my post-baccalaureate certificate in Communication Sciences and Disorders at UW in 2016. Finally, I received my M.S. in Speech-Language Pathology from Northwestern University in 2018.”

What made you want to become an SLP? “My father is a retired Spanish professor (I speak Spanish with near native fluency) and grew up from an early age with my parents living in a group home with adults with disabilities. I have always been drawn to the medical field and working with the adult and geriatric populations.”

What are your areas of interest? Are you specialized in a specific area? “Something that I love most about my profession is the large variety of patients we see. I had an internship in an Ear, Nose, and Throat clinic with my graduate advisor who was a voice disorder specialist. I also interned at a subacute pediatric hospital that was had a large Spanish speaking population. I have always had a passion for working with individuals with voice disorders and swallowing disorders (AKA dysphagia). My dysphagia course at Northwestern University was taught by Bonnie Martin-Harris, who was one of the primary researchers and developers of the Modified Barium Swallow Impairment Profile (MBSImP), which is a standardization and training tool for SLPs when completing and interpreting videofluoroscopic swallow studies (aka MBSS or VFSS).”

What type of therapist do you aspire to be? “I aspire to be a therapist that uses a supportive, patient- and family-centered approach with the most up to date evaluation and treatment methods. What made you want to become an occupational therapist? “I always knew I wanted to work in healthcare. I wanted to find a profession where I could work to increase not the quantity but the quality of someone’s life and to help them feel confident and independent. I fell in love with the work of an occupational therapist and their ability to touch the different areas of people’s lives and being able to focus on helping individuals engage in the things they need and want to do in their daily lives.”

What are your areas of interest? Are you specialized in a specific area? “I am not specialized in any specific areas although I would like to work to be in the future.
