Children need a great deal of free play to thrive.

The small-scale challenges & setbacks that happen during play are like an inoculation that prepares children to face much larger challenges later.

It’s an imperative that’s evident across all mammal species.

Our Experience ~ Our Guiding Structure

Events in life often happen to us, outside of us but towards us, an external reality.

We in turn can take that event and create in our minds our own perception/understanding of it, an internal reality.

Both of these are our experiences.

What we go through in life, our experiences, creates structures (guiding principles) for how we see & interpret the world. These are what we call our organising principles. Most of these structures (organising principles) are unconscious in that they work outside of our awareness.

What do we do with our experiences?

We have the choice to engage with them in a therapeutic space if we want to become aware of & change them.

When we explore our experiences, consciously being aware of our responses to them, we have the opportunity to ascribe new meaning to old experiences.

Thus, we are possibly able to experience a past event differently.
While the experience in and of itself hasn’t changed, our perception & insight of it may have changed / developed.

This allows us to reorganise our experience & the meaning it has to us.

What is your experience and what and how does it shape you?

“Every day, you have the power to choose.” - Michelle Obama

While there are many things we don’t necessarily have the power to choose, there are some things we can choose.

We can start each day and choose
~ how we see ourselves
~ how we speak to ourselves
~ how we see others
~ how we speak to others
~ how we see the world
~ what our responses & reactions towards the world around us are

Whether the choice is big or small, easy or difficult, let there be a conscious choice of what you are choosing each new day.

the in-between 🍃

there will be days that are filled with so many miracles,

and days where you question every little moment.

there’s nothing wrong with living in the in-between,

where life is going by day by day…

a sense of calm and a space to collect…

spend more moments in the in-between and watch how it allows you to appreciate each day

Refresh 🌿

The word self-care gets used so much that we often just glaze over the concept.

On an afternoon walk I realized I was feeling so refreshed, alive and full of energy (all of this in spite of sleepless nights caring for my little joy).

It was on the walk that it clicked.

I had taken some time to forge a gap in the day to do something just for me.
It was a short walk, it went nowhere fancy but it was outside and in the sunshine.

It was a reminder that we can so often lose sight of the things that refresh us, that give us life energy.

Of course we have to do life’s admin and take responsibility but let’s not get so busy doing the admin of life that we don’t leave space to live life.

If possible try take a moment for something to refresh you.

It could be something in your daily routine like being mindful and present when taking a shower or something small like stopping to smell the herbs or flowers.

Even just for 5 seconds that moment of refreshment can go a long way.

Acceptance 🤍

Whatever new season you may find yourself in it’s okay to not be okay. It’s okay to not know all the answers.

It’s not a weakness, it’s just a step.

And if the steps keep getting taken they will eventually lead to a new place, one in which you do know and where you are okay.

And eventually we see that even in the moments that we don’t know we are still okay.

It’s a sort of magic,
To accept yourself,
In every fear,
And folly,
And flaw.

To see yourself for
Who you really are,
And dare to love it all.

In the small 🤍

This week has been a reminder to take stock. To take stock of what matters in life.

It’s always important to set goals, to create the bigger picture that you want to see yourself in.

But…sometimes we can get so caught up in the race, on what the next steps need to be that we lose sight of the joys right before our eyes.

No one needs to be reminded about how precious life is.

Yet sometimes we get so focused on the end destination, whatever that may be, that we miss the present moment. The moments that make the journey. The moments we see in the photos.

So plan ahead, dream big and create visions but stop to look at the small in front of you.

In the deep moments when you may feel overwhelmed or when the struggle is strong, take a step back….breathe. Knowing this too shall pass.

If possible, when you find yourself in those moments look towards the small. What is the small joy that maybe can be found.

Some of the deep moments might look like…

The deep moment = the possible joy:

- early wake ups = children to love
- house to clean = safe place to live
- laundry to do = clothes to wear
- dirty dishes = food to eat
- crumbs under the table = family meals
- grocery shopping to do = money to spend
- toilets to clean = indoor plumbing
- lots of noise = kids having fun
- endless questions = a child who is learning
- getting into bed tired & sore = I’m still alive

New Life 🌱

With Spring upon us we can often feel the sense of a fresh beginning and renewal.

While something new is beautiful and hopeful it can also involve so much more.

The experience of creating something new or starting afresh can be both invigorating and exhausting.

It almost doesn’t matter what that “new is.
Whether it’s a new job, a new mindset, a new baby, a new routine, a new home, a new relationship, a new year, a new school, a new hobby or even a new therapist.

While new can be exciting it can also require us to have patience.

The patience to allow ourselves to settle in and to take root.
To become accustomed of whatever our new is.

This means we allow ourselves the opportunity to firstly learn (observe) what we are experiencing and how we and our lives may have changed.

Secondly we allow ourselves the chance to adapt, not only to the new environment/lifestyle but also to the new us and what is required of us.

While we live in a busy (noisy) world we sometimes have to remind ourselves that adapting to the new often takes place quietly, in the unseen.

Just like the roots of a plant grow and flourish below the soil so do our own moments of growth happen.

Slowly.

But how pivotal these roots (our various growths) are…to be able to sustain that new thing we have started in our lives.

As you soak up the elements that come with this season of Spring allow yourself and any “new” in your life the chance to quietly emerge with no rush.

Self-understanding…

…the next step after we have turned inwards to focus on the self.

Once we are aware of the part that is internal, we have begun the process of understanding the self.

This allows us to organise and structure build within.

What does structure build refer to?
It refers to us reorganising our experiences of the past & present in new ways.
Through reorganising our experiences of events from the past & present, we are able to create and carry forward new understandings and organizations of experiences in the future.

This in turn allows us to perceive and experience ourselves (and others) in novel ways in the future.

Turning inwards (as discussed in the previous post) is the step to self-understanding, which is the step to experiencing our circumstances in a different new way.

This is one way in which we are able to better manage our anxieties/stressors, especially in situations in which we don’t have much influence/control over external factors.
