Doing an HTMA test?

How you collect the hair matters more than you think.

Here’s how to collect it correctly:

• Cut from the back of the head
• Use the first 1–1.5 inches closest to the scalp
• Take small pieces from multiple spots
• Hair should be clean, dry, and product-free
• Avoid heavily chemically treated hair if possible
• Do not use conditioner and do not place any products in your hair after washing it.
• Rinse with distilled water and let it hair dry before taking the sample.

Why the first inch?

Because that section reflects the most recent mineral activity in the body.

This is why details matter in functional testing.

Good data → better clinical decisions.

We like to test.
Not guess.

Throwback to one of my favorite full-circle moments. 🤍

There is something incredibly special about helping a family conceive… supporting a healthy pregnancy… celebrating delivery… and then watching those babies grow.

Henry is TWO now.

And moments like this never get old.

He became baby #2 for the Klassen family after a long infertility journey.

Their first daughter Jolie was also conceived after we worked together to support Brittany’s health from a root-cause functional medicine perspective.

Two babies. Two different chapters. One incredible journey.

💝 Brittany’s story in her own words:

“My husband and I started trying to grow our family in September of 2017. Each passing month the fear of infertility grew. After two unsuccessful years we started searching for answers.

In 2019 I was diagnosed with endometriosis and had surgery. While it helped some of the pain, my symptoms returned within months. The thought of more surgery, the financial burden, and still struggling with infertility was overwhelming.

We did conceive briefly after surgery, but miscarried at 7 weeks. That experience was incredibly hard and we often felt like just another task on a doctor’s schedule.

In January 2021 we decided to try a more holistic approach and began working with Dr. Taryn. For the first time I felt heard. She spent time reviewing my labs and looking at my whole health instead of just one piece.

With targeted nutrition and supplement changes my cramping became almost non-existent — something I had been told wouldn’t be possible without more surgery.”

Most Crohn’s patients are told their only option is lifelong medication.

And while medication absolutely has its place, many patients are never shown how to also address why the inflammation is happening.

We had a follow-up today with a patient whose f***l calprotectin was 508 just a few months ago.

After a few months of personalized functional care, it is now 30.

Flares are less frequent.
Flares are less severe.
Quality of life has drastically improved.

This is what happens when you stop only chasing symptoms and start improving the environment the disease exists in.

Because remission isn’t just about suppressing inflammation… sometimes it’s about removing what keeps driving it.

This is why we test. Not guess.

Women need more protein than they think.

Skipping breakfast and running on coffee alone is one of the biggest blood sugar mistakes I see. It sets the stage for cortisol spikes, energy crashes, cravings, and hormone chaos later in the day.

Eggs are one of the best foundational foods you can start with. Quality matters — darker orange yolks usually mean better nutrient density and more choline, which is critical for brain health, detox pathways, hormones, and cellular health.

And please don’t fear the yolk… that’s where the nutrition lives.

Also check what you’re cooking them in. If it’s vegetable oil, canola, soybean, or cooking sprays, consider upgrading to butter, ghee, or tallow instead.

If you:
• crash mid-morning
• feel hungry shortly after eating
• crave caffeine or sugar
• feel tired but wired

Your breakfast may be the problem.

Aim for 30g+ protein in the morning and watch what happens to your energy, focus, and hunger signals.

If you want help building a nutrition plan that actually supports your metabolism and hormones, we can help. 🤍

Fertility is not just reproductive.
It's whole-body health.

Egg quality and s***m quality reflect whole-body health from the previous 3–4 months.

Things like mineral balance, blood sugar stability, inflammation, gut health, and stress all affect outcomes.

Functional medicine focuses on improving the environment the body is trying to conceive in… not just forcing ovulation.

Because when you improve the terrain, you often improve the probability.

If you are ready to improve your whole-body health and want to walk the journey with a trusted and knowledgeable care team... we are here for you. 🩷

Stress hormones play a pivotal role in PMS.

Many women assume PMS is just an estrogen or progesterone issue, but often the first place we need to look is the stress response system.

When cortisol stays elevated, the body may:
• reduce progesterone production
• create symptoms of estrogen dominance
• disrupt ovulation
• worsen PMS symptoms
• impact sleep and blood sugar stability

This is why guessing based on symptoms alone can lead people in the wrong direction.

I always tell patients:
Test. Don’t guess.

Blood testing often only shows a single moment in time, which is why I often recommend more comprehensive hormone testing like the DUTCH test to evaluate cortisol patterns, hormone metabolism, and progesterone production more accurately.

If you’re feeling:
• more anxious before your cycle
• wired but exhausted
• more irritable than usual
• heavier or more symptomatic cycles

…it may be worth looking deeper instead of assuming it’s “normal PMS.”

Question:
Do your PMS symptoms feel worse during stressful seasons of life?

A journey of hope. A reminder that answers are possible.

Infertility can feel isolating, especially when you’re told to just “live with it.” But sometimes what’s needed isn’t acceptance of symptoms… it’s a deeper look at why they’re happening.

Stories like this are why we do what we do.
Because fertility is rarely just one thing. It’s hormones, minerals, inflammation, gut health, stress physiology, and the environment the body is trying to conceive in.

You are not broken. You may just need a different lens.

If you’re struggling and feel stuck without answers, you are not alone. 🤍

𝐈𝐧𝐟𝐞𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐢𝐬𝐧’𝐭 𝐣𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐞𝐠𝐠.

Fertility depends on the 𝐞𝐧𝐯𝐢𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 the body is trying to conceive in.

Things that often get missed:

✨ 𝐈𝐦𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐞 𝐛𝐚𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 → implantation depends on it
✨ 𝐔𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡 → lining receptivity matters
✨ 𝐌𝐢𝐜𝐫𝐨𝐛𝐢𝐨𝐦𝐞 → impacts inflammation & hormones
✨ 𝐇𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐩𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐬 → not just levels, but 𝐰𝐡𝐲

This is why we sometimes use advanced testing like DUTCH to look deeper at:
• hormone patterns
• cortisol rhythm
• estrogen metabolism
• detox capacity

Because fertility care shouldn’t just focus on forcing ovulation.

It should focus on improving the 𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐧.

And when you improve the terrain… you often improve the 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐛𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲. 🤍

𝐖𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝐭𝐨𝐥𝐝 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐥𝐨𝐨𝐤𝐞𝐝 “𝐧𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐥”… 𝐛𝐮𝐭 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐝𝐢𝐝𝐧’𝐭 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐰𝐞𝐫𝐬?

I’m curious how many women have heard this. Comment 𝐘𝐄𝐒 if this was part of your story. 👇

This is one of the most important life lessons you will ever learn as a mom and a wife.

You cannot pour from an empty cup.
You cannot heal while running on empty.
You cannot be everything to everyone if you never allow yourself to rest.

Rest is not weakness.
Rest is not laziness.
Rest is part of healing.

And sometimes the most productive thing you can do… is slow down.

🤍

Preparing for pregnancy should start before the positive test.

One of the biggest things we look at in functional medicine prior to conception isn't just hormones… it's mineral balance.

Why?

Because minerals control:

• hormone signaling
• thyroid function
• blood sugar stability
• nervous system regulation
• egg quality
• stress resilience

Hormones are often responders to what is happening deeper in the body.

This is where HTMA (Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis) can be incredibly helpful.

HTMA can show patterns like:
• mineral depletion from chronic stress
• hidden copper or iron imbalances
• metabolic patterns affecting fertility
• toxic element exposure
• adrenal burnout patterns
• nervous system stress

Pregnancy requires significant mineral reserves. Your body will pull from your stores of:
• magnesium
• zinc
• calcium
• sodium
• potassium
• trace minerals

If those reserves are already low, this can contribute to things like:

• fatigue
• hormone struggles
• difficult pregnancies
• postpartum depletion
• milk supply struggles
• slow recovery

Preconception work often isn't about doing more…

It's about making sure the body has the resources it needs.

Things we often focus on before pregnancy:
✔ Mineral repletion
✔ Nervous system support
✔ Blood sugar stability
✔ Gentle detox support
✔ Thyroid support
✔ Building resilience instead of depletion

Because healthy pregnancies don't start at conception.

They start with preparation.

Your body isn't just trying to get pregnant.
It's trying to build a healthy environment to sustain pregnancy.

And sometimes the missing piece isn't another hormone test…

It's looking at the foundation first.

Let’s Get Back To Health!

Functional Medicine is an evolution in the practice of medicine that better addresses the healthcare needs of the 21st century. By shifting the traditional disease-centered focus of medical practice to a more patient-centered approach, functional medicine addresses the whole person, not just an isolated set of symptoms. Functional Medicine practitioners spend time with their patients, listening to their histories and looking at the interactions among genetic, environmental, and lifestyle factors that can influence long-term health and complex, chronic disease. In this way, Functional Medicine supports the unique expression of health and vitality for each individual.
