Your heart has three major functions — pumping, plumbing, and electrical. ā¤ļø

Today on Whiteboard Wednesday, Dr. Rick Pumill from Cross County Cardiology explains an important question we’re often asked:

What’s the difference between a heart attack and sudden cardiac death?

They are not the same — and understanding the difference can save lives.

A heart attack is a blocked artery. This is a ā€œplumbing problemā€ that damages heart muscle.

Sudden cardiac death is an electrical problem. It’s caused by a sudden disruption in the heart’s electrical system that can lead to collapse.

Dr. Pumill breaks it down this way:

āœ… Pumping problem → Weak heart (heart failure)
āœ… Plumbing problem → Blocked artery (heart attack)
āœ… Electrical problem → Abnormal rhythm (sudden cardiac death)

There can be overlap — a massive heart attack can trigger an electrical event — but they are fundamentally different processes.

Electrical abnormalities may be caused by:
• Prior heart damage
• A weak heart
• Genetic conditions
• Electrolyte imbalances
• Certain toxins

Understanding your risk factors matters.

At Cross County Cardiology, we use advanced diagnostics and personalized care to evaluate all three aspects of heart health — pumping, plumbing, and electrical — because comprehensive heart care means looking at the whole picture.

If you have symptoms, a family history of heart disease, or concerns about your heart rhythm, don’t wait.

Your heart’s rhythm matters more than you think — and even small changes can signal something important. šŸ’“

An arrhythmia is an abnormal heart rhythm that can cause your heart to beat too fast, too slow, or irregularly. While some rhythm changes are harmless, others can increase your risk of stroke or heart failure if left untreated.

In our latest blog, we break down:

āœ… What an arrhythmia is and why it happens
āœ… Common symptoms like palpitations, dizziness, or shortness of breath
āœ… When to see a cardiologist
āœ… Advanced treatment options available

Early detection and personalized care can make all the difference in protecting your long-term heart health.

Your heart health matters, and understanding your options makes all the difference. Today on Whiteboard Wednesday, Dr. Chris Pumill breaks down the main cholesterol medications we use to help protect your heart. ā¤ļøšŸ«€

In this video I’ll show you the four main classes of cholesterol-lowering medications and how we decide which one is right for you.

We explain how each medication works, who it’s best for, and why treatment is always personalized — not one-size-fits-all.

I cover:

āœ… Statins – the most common medications that reduce cholesterol production in the liver and are closely monitored for safety

āœ… PCSK9 inhibitors and Inclisiran (Leqvio) – advanced injectable therapies for patients who need additional LDL lowering

āœ… Zetia – a safe, effective add-on option to help patients reach their cholesterol goals without switching therapies

At Cross County Cardiology, we use advanced therapies and personalized treatment plans to help you reach your LDL goals safely and effectively. Not every patient needs the same medication — and that’s where expert guidance matters.

If your cholesterol numbers aren’t at goal, let’s talk about your options. šŸ“Š

Heart health advice can be confusing, especially with so many myths circulating online—so today we’re clearing things up with facts, not fear. ā¤ļøšŸ§

In this video, Dr. Chris Pumill breaks down common myths about alternative medical therapies and heart health.

He explains why stress, supplements, and one-size-fits-all advice can directly impact your cardiovascular risk.

āœ… Why stress reduction techniques like mindfulness truly matter for heart health

āœ… How chronic stress can affect the heart similarly to sleep deprivation

āœ… Why supplements alone are not a cure—and can sometimes do harm
āœ… The importance of personalized, individualized heart health recommendations

šŸ’™ The takeaway: there are no shortcuts to heart health. The best outcomes come from combining lifestyle changes, medical insight, and personalized care.

Heart health education matters, and understanding what’s happening inside your arteries can empower you to take action earlier, prevent complications, and protect your heart for the long run. ā¤ļøšŸ«€

In this Whiteboard Wednesday, Dr. Kevin Soriano explains coronary artery disease and how plaque buildup affects blood flow to the heart.

As plaque builds up inside the coronary arteries, blood flow becomes restricted—leading to symptoms like chest pain, shortness of breath, and fatigue during everyday activities.

In this video, he explains what coronary arteries do, how plaque develops over time, and why symptoms often appear once a vessel becomes significantly narrowed. He also highlights why prevention—through blood pressure control, cholesterol management, and lifestyle changes—is so important, and how treatments like medications and stents can restore healthy blood flow when needed.

The key takeaway? Coronary artery disease is common—but with early detection, personalized care, and the right treatment plan, it’s highly manageable.

Just because you could do it before doesn’t mean your body will always let you—and that change matters. šŸ«€

If you’ve noticed new chest discomfort, palpitations with lightheadedness, or that you suddenly can’t keep up with the same level of activity you handled six months or a year ago, your heart may be asking for a closer look.

A drop in exercise tolerance isn’t something to brush off as ā€œgetting older.ā€ It can be an early signal of heart disease—and sometimes heart and lung conditions can feel surprisingly similar. That’s why evaluation matters.

You should also consider seeing a cardiologist if:
• You have a family history of heart disease
• You’ve been told you have risk factors like high blood pressure, diabetes, or high cholesterol
• Your primary care doctor finds an abnormal EKG
• Symptoms feel vague but persistent—shortness of breath, fatigue, or reduced stamina

At Cross County Cardiology, we focus on getting answers early, using advanced diagnostics and a patient-centered approach—so small changes don’t turn into big problems.

If something feels off, trust that instinct.

Ever feel leg pain isn’t just ā€œgetting olderā€? šŸ¦µšŸ’ It might be your arteries asking for attention—and they’re surprisingly good at whispering before they shout.

Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD) happens when plaque narrows the arteries that supply blood to your legs. Less blood flow means muscles don’t get the oxygen they need—especially when walking or exercising.

Here’s the tricky part:
PAD often hides in plain sight. Symptoms like leg cramping, heaviness, or fatigue can be brushed off for years.

That’s where PAD testing comes in.
A simple, non-invasive test—like the Ankle-Brachial Index (ABI)—compares blood pressure in your arms and legs to spot circulation problems early. No needles. No stress test. Just valuable insight.

Why it matters?
PAD isn’t just about leg pain—it’s closely linked to heart attack and stroke risk. Catching it early helps protect both your legs and your heart.

If your legs slow you down, don’t ignore them—they’re part of the same team as your heart. šŸ˜‰

Heart anatomy can sound complicated—but once you understand the flow, it all starts to click. ā¤ļøšŸ«€

In this Whiteboard Wednesday, Dr. Chris Pumill breaks down how blood flows through the heart in a simple, easy-to-follow way.

Here’s the quick version:

Blood returns from the body into the right atrium, moves through the right ventricle, and is sent to the lungs to pick up oxygen. Once oxygenated, it travels back into the left side of the heart, where the left ventricle pumps it out through the aorta to supply the entire body.

Think of it like a relay system:

āž”ļø Right side = sends blood to the lungs

āž”ļø Left side = sends oxygen-rich blood to the body

When every chamber and valve works together, blood flow stays smooth and efficient—keeping you energized and your organs happy.

Some stories remind us why early action—and the right care—can change everything. ā¤ļø

Dennis McCarroll, Mayor of Moonachie, NJ, shares his powerful journey after trusting his instincts and visiting his cardiologist when something didn’t feel right. What started as difficulty walking a few blocks turned into lifesaving care—fast.

Within days, Dennis underwent his first heart valve replacement. Years later, when symptoms returned, the same team acted quickly again. Two surgeries. Two second chances.

Because of that care, Dennis didn’t just survive—he gained years with his children and now precious time with his grandchildren.

His message is simple and powerful: listen to your body, don’t delay, and surround yourself with a medical team that treats you like family.

At Cross County Cardiology, moments like these are why we do what we do—delivering patient-centered care when it matters most.
