Millennials are spending over 60 hours per week sitting, thanks to long commutes, Zoom-packed workdays, and evenings of streaming and scrolling. New research from the University of Colorado Boulder and the University of California Riverside suggests this sedentary lifestyle could significantly boost heart disease risk and accelerate aging.

The study, involving over 1,000 Colorado residents (including 730 twins), found that meeting the minimum recommended physical activity guidelines—about 20 minutes per day of moderate exercise—isn’t enough to counteract the hazards of prolonged sitting. Using identical twins helped rule out genetic factors and focus on lifestyle differences. The study found that replacing sitting with exercise seemed to work better to improve cholesterol than simply adding exercise to a full day of sitting.

Participants, aged 28 to 49, reported sitting for an average of 9 hours daily, with some sitting as much as 16 hours. Despite engaging in moderate physical activity for an average of 80 to 160 minutes weekly, the more time spent sitting, the older one appeared in terms of heart and metabolic health.

Adding vigorous activity, such as running or cycling for at least 30 minutes daily, had a significant buffering effect. Individuals who engaged in vigorous exercise had cholesterol and BMI measures that looked like those of people 5 to 10 years younger who sat as much but didn’t exercise. However, even vigorous activity couldn’t fully counteract the negative impacts of prolonged sitting. Reducing sitting time and increasing vigorous exercise may be necessary to reduce the risk of premature aging in early adulthood. This could involve using a standing desk, taking breaks, organizing walking meetings, and engaging in at least 30 minutes of vigorous activity daily.

Young adults sit 60-plus hours per week, boosting their heart disease risk and accelerating signs of aging, according to new research. Vigorous exercise works best to counteract it, but sitting less is ideal.

Adaptogens, such natural herbs and plant substances like ashwagandha, reishi, and rhodiola, are gaining popularity among young people though social media platforms as tools to help the body manage stress. With 47% of Americans reporting higher stress since the pandemic—many are turning to these herbal supplements, which have been used in traditional medicine for centuries. While they show promise in supporting stress resilience and boosting mood or libido, it’s important to approach adaptogens with caution!

Adaptogens are substances believed to help the body cope with stress by interacting with the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, which regulates the body’s stress response. To qualify as an adaptogen, a plant must be nontoxic at normal doses, support the body’s ability to manage stress, and help restore balance after a stressful event. Popular adaptogens include:

Ashwagandha: Known for reducing anxiety and stress.
Reishi: A mushroom used to support immune function.
Rhodiola: Helps combat fatigue and improves mental clarity.
Tulsi (holy basil): Boosts focus and supports immune health.

Although adaptogens are trending in wellness culture, scientific research on their benefits is still developing. Some studies suggest they may help with fatigue, improve mood, and boost the immune system. Ultimately, while adaptogens offer potential benefits, they are not a cure-all, and should be viewed as a complementary addition to a balanced lifestyle rather than a substitute for proper medical care or healthy habits. Always consult with a healthcare professional to ensure their safe and effective use, especially if you are currently taking medication.
