It’s Wellness Wednesday, and we’re raising a glass (of water!) to healthy habits. 💧Did you know that older adults are more prone to dehydration in the summer? Let’s keep our loved ones safe and feeling their best with simple hydration tips.
Here are 5 quick tips to help caregivers keep elderly clients hydrated during the summer:
💧 Offer water regularly, not just when they're thirsty
Older adults may not feel thirst as strongly, so prompt small sips throughout the day—especially in hot weather.
🥤 Make drinks appealing and varied
Try chilled herbal teas, flavored water, coconut water, or adding slices of fruit (like lemon or cucumber) to make hydration more enjoyable.
🥣 Incorporate hydrating foods
Serve water-rich foods like watermelon, cucumbers, strawberries, and soups to boost fluid intake without relying only on drinks.
⏰ Set hydration reminders
Use phone alarms, daily checklists, or visual cues (like a water pitcher at the table) to create a hydration routine.
☀️ Avoid peak heat hours and monitor for signs of dehydration
Keep them in cool environments during mid-day heat, and watch for symptoms like dry mouth, confusion, dark urine, or dizziness.
