Incredibly proud to share that our DHR Health Institute for Research and Development (www.dhrresearh.org) was selected to become part of the The Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health (ARPA-H) Customer Experience HUB-SPOKE network https://arpa-h.gov/.

ARPA-H is a research funding agency that supports transformative biomedical and health breakthroughs – ranging from the molecular to the societal – to provide health solutions for all.

We are among 269 (and growing) other spokes in the network which will allow us to bring many facets of advanced clinical care to our patients in the Rio Grande Valley.

The Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health (ARPA-H) supports transformative research to drive biomedical and health breakthroughs ranging from molecular to societal to provide transformative health solutions for all.

In addition to our commitment to our patients of the Rio Grande Valley, we are equally as committed to our youth. Three years ago we ventured to begin a program that would immerse rising high school Senior students in the behind the scenes of health care and biomedical sciences. Our goal was to expand the vision of what it meant to have a career in Health Care. Students were exposed to various medical disciplines, were certified in life saving medical processes such as CPR and Stop the Bleed and others. Moreover, we strategically wove into each lesson the importance of biomedical and clinical research and exemplified the beautiful synergy between clinical research and clinical delivery. We are incredibly proud of all our students that participated in the Third Annual Junior Clinical Research Internship. Our students came from all over the country and committed to two weeks of a rigorous curriculum in healthcare and biomedical sciences. We are also grateful to our years-long partnership with Region One Education Service Center. This year we also welcomed colleagues from Benavides Independent School District, Jubilee Independent School District and students from communities across the country. We could not have been as successful without the dedication from the DHR Health System.

DHR Health Institute for Research & Development in partnership with GEAR UP Pathways to the Future, Region One Education Service Center, organized a 4-day intensive and highly interactive clinical training program which ended today. Entitled LASER - Leadership in Academics, Science, Education, and Research, this spirally integrated program exposed the students to various disciplines in healthcare and research.

Eight grade students from 22 Independent School Districts in South Texas have been selected to participate in the LASER program. Students will participate in this program for a total of five years until they graduate from high school. During this period, students will be exposed to various disciplines in healthcare and research with the aim of creating critical thinkers and lifelong learners.

This was my last venture in DHR Health as I have moved on to another opportunity in Houston. It is a bitter sweet goodbye to DHR Health and the community in South Texas where I had the distinct pleasure to work with an amazing team of professionals and colleagues at Region One ESC to develop such innovative programs that are bound to change the lives of students, parents, teachers, and facilitators!

DHR Health Institute for Research & Development in partnership with Region One GEAR UP Pathways to the Future organized a 4-day Junior Clinical Research Internship for 8th grade students from regional independent school districts. This is part of the program entitled LASER - Leadership in Academics, Science, Education, and Research.

During these immersive and highly interactive sessions, students, teachers, and facilitators will be exposed to various disciplines in healthcare allowing them to have a comprehensive understanding of this field.

The session was opened by a welcome address by Sohail Rao, President and CEO, DHR Health Institute for Research and Development. Dr. Rao, who initiated this program in partnership with his team, stressed on the importance of this endeavor and underscored the need for the students to gain maximum advantage of this unique opportunity.

On behalf of DHR Health Institute for Research and Development, I had a great opportunity to attend the 10th US - Mexico Regional Binational Public Health Conference and share with the participants the challenges related to the burgeoning public health crisis in the border region. The conference was attended by over 150 participants from US and Mexico including Dr. Joel Vincente Hernandez, Secretary of Health, State of Tamaulipas, Mexico.

In my presentation, I stressed on the impact of medical, social and economic variables on evolving challenges in public health which includes obesity, diabetes, liver diseases, cancer, cardiovascular and mental disorders, and drug addiction. The surging inequity in access to medical care compounded by impecunious socioeconomic conditions have heightened these challenges. The role that DHR Health and DHR Health Institute for Research & Development is playing in mitigating these challenges was discussed.
