Turkey, Treats & Thankful Hearts: For families with a child in the hospital, it can be difficult to properly celebrate the holiday season.

To offer a sense of normalcy and comfort to the families of pediatric patients at South Texas Health System Children's, Ronald McDonald House Charities South Texas hosted an early Thanksgiving luncheon this week in the facility's in-hospital Ronald McDonald Family Room.

More than a dozen families had the chance to partake in a delicious meal of savory turkey, traditional sides and sweet treats.

Located on the third floor of South Texas Health System Children’s, the Family Room offers parents a quiet place where they can recharge, take a break, grab a bite to eat, shower or get some much-needed rest just mere steps away from their child’s bedside.

Thank you, Ronald McDonald House Charities, for your devotion to our community this holiday season and throughout the year!

Inspiring the Next Generation of Healthcare All-Stars: Career days are a terrific opportunity for children to explore various career paths and gain insight into the education and skills required for success.

During a recent career day at the Valley View Early College Campus, students had the opportunity to learn about the vital role laboratory professionals play in patient care at South Texas Health System Children's & STHS Edinburg. Additionally, the students were able to examine different types of laboratory specimens under a microscope.

Thank you, Valley View ISD, for the opportunity to inspire the next generation of healthcare heroes and showcase the science that helps drive accurate diagnoses and quality patient care.

Every day, children explore the world with curiosity and excitement, but accidents can happen in the blink of an eye. Most childhood injuries are preventable with a little awareness and by taking some simple safety steps at home, in the car and outdoors.
Unintentional injuries remain the leading cause of death for children between the ages of 1-14, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, with falls the most common cause of injury in children, accounting for more than 40% of unintentional injuries among kids.
Unfortunately, childhood accidents can greatly impact a child’s development, affecting their physical health, emotional well-being, social life and academic performance.
The impacts range from immediate challenges like pain and mobility restrictions to long-term issues like increased anxiety, depression, posttraumatic stress symptoms, lower academic performance and a higher risk for chronic health problems later in life.
The good news: Childhood injuries are largely preventable through a combination of environmental modifications and safety practices. By taking proactive measures like ensuring home and vehicle safety, supervising children closely and teaching them about potential hazards, parents and caregivers can significantly reduce the risk of common injuries.
To highlight the most common childhood injuries and how to prevent them, South Texas Health System Children’s will dedicate its latest Let’s Talk Children’s Health webinar to accident prevention.
Broadcast live via the South Texas Health System Children’s page, the online seminar will discuss preventative measures, safety tips and community resources available to always keep safety top of mind.

Delivering Quality, Compassionate Pediatric Emergency Care: Registered nurse Lara Solis is passionate about pediatric emergency care. She takes great pride in treating the littlest of patients in the emergency room at South Texas Health System Children’s, the Rio Grande Valley's largest dedicated children's ER.

Lara’s career journey within South Texas Health System is nothing short of inspiring.

She began her healthcare career in 2016 at STHS Behavioral, where she worked as a mental health technician. Driven by passion and determination, she advanced her career by becoming a licensed vocational nurse and, most recently, a registered nurse. In July 2024, she proudly moved to STHS Children’s, fulfilling her dream of working in the fast-paced world of emergency care.

With two sisters who work as registered nurses, Lara always knew the ER was where she wanted to be. Helping children during their most fragile moments isn't just part of her job, it's her calling.

“I enjoy working at STHS because there are so many facilities and opportunities for growth,” Lara shares. “It’s a place where you can truly build your career.”

Thank you, Lara, for your commitment, compassion and the exceptional care you provide to our pediatric patients, especially during those late-night hours.

Surviving & Thriving After Premature Birth: A premature birth, which occurs when a baby is born before 37 weeks of pregnancy, requires special, round-the-clock medical care from a team of experts in a hospital's neonatal intensive care unit (NICU).

This World Prematurity Day, South Texas Health System Children's joins STHS McAllen, home to the Rio Grande Valley's first NICU, in highlighting Ethan Kai Espinoza, who is thriving after being born premature.

In 2020, Sharon Martinez, the director of surgical services at STHS McAllen, gave birth to Ethan at 28 weeks gestation. Born 12 weeks premature, Ethan was immediately admitted into the NICU, where he proved to be a strong baby who continued to conquer and thrive despite numerous IVs, tube feedings, radiology exams and a sepsis diagnosis.

“Many hands and hearts were part of Ethan’s story,” says Sharon. “Their support and care created joyful moments from the beginning.”

Today, Ethan is an active and energetic five-year-old who enjoys playing outside, riding his scooter and playing with his two older brothers.

Thank you, Sharon, for entrusting STHS McAllen's NICU team with the specialized care Ethan required. When preterm births occur, STHS McAllen is at the ready to provide 24-hour quality, compassionate care. To learn more about the neonatal services at STHS, visit http://spklr.io/6189BMiux.

A Champion for Youth Sports: From building healthy habits and promoting physical activity to strengthening character and confidence, youth sports play a powerful role in shaping a child’s future.

Through Elevate, a one-of-a-kind sports program developed by the Boys & Girls Club of McAllen and McAllen ISD, students have the opportunity to grow as athletes and leaders while proudly representing their schools in a variety of athletic activities.

For the fifth consecutive year, South Texas Health System Children's is honored to sponsor the Elevate program alongside its sister facilities, and we're thrilled to see the STHS name on the jerseys of the teams across multiple sports, including the Cathey Middle School Cobras 7-on-7 flag football team.

Congratulations to the Cobras for their hard work and for representing their school with pride!

Where Compassion Meets Critical Care: As a dedicated registered nurse, Camila Cantu has been caring for our tiniest and bravest patients on the night shift for nearly six months in the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) at South Texas Health System Children’s.

'Donut' Underestimate the Power of Joy! For a child, a hospital stay is a disruption to their normal life and routines, as well as a loss of personal control.

With generous support from The Auxiliary to South Texas Health System, the STHS Children’s Child Life Department recently celebrated National Donut Appreciation Day with our pediatric patients in the most colorful way!

Each child received fun coloring sheets to mark the occasion, resulting in big smiles and an abundance of creativity with sprinkles during their hospital stay.

STHS Children's believes that celebrating special days like National Donut Day with hospitalized patients helps them feel like kids again. They are joyful moments that can make a world of difference on their healing journey.

Thank you to the Auxiliary for helping bring a sweet escape to our young patients!
