Providing Insight into Healthcare Career Paths: It takes the collective effort of countless professionals beyond physicians and nurses to provide comprehensive, quality healthcare.

So, to help ensure the Rio Grande Valley is prepared to meet the growing demand for healthcare professionals across the four-county region, South Texas Health System partnered with RGV LEAD, Inc. last week to host a special conference for school counselors and career & technical education (CTE) directors aimed at highlighting the numerous career opportunities within the healthcare industry.

Entitled "Discovering Healthcare Trends & Careers," the day-long event brought together nearly 40 education professionals who help students navigate to successful occupational paths to highlight the numerous career opportunities available in healthcare, including respiratory therapists, speech pathologists, physical therapists, health information technologists and other fast-growing jobs within the healthcare industry.

Participating counselors and CTE directors also had the opportunity to learn about the educational requirements for numerous healthcare jobs within STHS’ 12 facilities, hear from seasoned professionals on the education and professional skills required to succeed in those roles and get a first-hand look at healthcare heroes in action during a tour of STHS Children’s and STHS Edinburg.

Thank you, RGV LEAD - Rio Grande Valley Linking Economic and Academic Development, for the opportunity to highlight the many healthcare career opportunities to the education leaders who help students navigate their career paths!

Doh Your Own Thing! Studies show that receiving toys can help hospitalized children feel better and heal faster while helping them cope with fear, uncertainty and separation from loved ones.

With the generous support of The Auxiliary to South Texas Health System, the STHS Children’s Child Life Program recently celebrated National Play-Doh Day with our pediatric patients in the most creative way.

Play-Doh isn’t just play – through creative expression, tactile play and a whole lot of fun, activities like this support emotional healing, reduce stress and bring comfort to kids during their stay.

Each child received their very own can of Play-Doh and fun coloring sheets to mark the occasion, which resulted in big smiles, an abundance of creativity and a bit of sparkle during their hospital stay.

STHS Children's believes that celebrating special days like Play-Doh Day with hospitalized patients helps them feel like kids again. They are joyful moments that can make a world of difference on their healing journey.

Thank you to the Auxiliary for helping bring joy, color and creativity to our young patients every day!

Celebrating the Unsung Heroes of Health & Hygiene! Hospitals are environments where the risk of infection is high. So, it's important to maintain sterile spaces.

This Environmental Services Week, South Texas Health System Children's and STHS Edinburg would like to salute the dedicated EVS personnel who ensure the facility's spaces are clean and safe for patients, visitors and staff.

With the many challenges and changes the healthcare industry has faced over the last few years, especially following the COVID-19 pandemic, these staff members have remained vigilant in their efforts to keep patients and staff safe by maintaining the highest standards of cleanliness and sanitation.

Our EVS teams meticulously clean and disinfect patient rooms, operating rooms, waiting areas and common spaces. Their work ensures potentially harmful pathogens are effectively removed, thereby reducing the risk of healthcare-associated infections.

Thank you to the EVS team at STHS Children's and STHS Edinburg for ensuring we deliver on our promise of providing quality, compassionate care in a clean and safe environment.

Fuel Your Day, Heal Their Tomorrow: Throughout the years, South Texas Health System Children’s has counted on the support of community organizations and businesses to help children cope more effectively with hospitalization.

Every four seconds, a child is treated for an injury in an emergency department, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), with roughly 8,000 children treated for fall-related injuries every day.
While many types of accidents and injuries are unpredictable, it’s important to stay vigilant, take steps to keep your kids out of harm’s way and talk to them about maintaining their own safety.
Unfortunately, unintentional injuries remain the leading cause for death for children ages 1 through 14, per the CDC, with non-fatal injuries continuing to impact child morbidity, as well as disability and a reduced quality of life for kids of all ages.
Safety doesn’t always have to be stressful. There are several steps that parents and caregivers can take to prevent accidents and injuries. Through preventative measures, kids can explore, play and grow while staying protected while their parents breathe a little easier.
Whether your child is learning to ride a bicycle, preparing to take a dip in the pool or take a ride in the car, it’s important to take keep them safe. So, this Child Injury Prevention Month, South Texas Health System Children’s will dedicate its latest Let’s Talk Children’s Health online seminar to injury prevention.
Broadcast live via South Texas Health System Children’s page, the online seminar will highlight the common types of accidents and injuries and how to prevent them, as well as highlight community resources available to keep kids safe.

Bridging the Gap Between the Care Team & the Patient's Needs: For nearly a year, Brenda Madrigal has played a vital role in bridging medical care with the emotional, social and practical support patients and their families require as a social worker at South Texas Health System Children’s.

Brenda serves as a patient advocate for children and their families, ensuring that they're treated clinically and supported holistically while navigating complex systems, managing trauma and addressing social determinants of health.

“Helping parents feel supported, advocating for their needs and ensuring children have the best care possible brings me great fulfillment,” says Brenda.

From conducting psychosocial assessments, connecting families with resources and supporting parents in navigating their child's medical journey to collaborating with the healthcare team to ensure each patient's needs are met beyond their medical care, Brenda is essential to helping STHS Children's deliver compassionate, family-centered care that promotes healing beyond the hospital walls.

“My role allows me to walk alongside families as they navigate difficult diagnoses, celebrate milestones and prepare for transitions in care,” she continues. “I believe every family deserves not just excellent medical treatment but also emotional and social support-and I'm grateful to provide that here at STHS Children's.”

Thank you, Brenda, for your dedication to putting patients and their families first.

Injury-Proofing Your Child's Life: Unintentional injuries are the leading cause of death for children and adolescents in the United States, per the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, with approximately 12,000 resulting in death.

For non-fatal injuries requiring emergency department visits, falls are the most common causes, especially in young children. Other common unintentional injuries include suffocation, burns and poisoning. Meanwhile, the leading causes of injury-related deaths in children are firearm-related injuries, motor vehicle accidents, drowning and poisoning.

Creating a safe environment through injury prevention strategies like childproofing your home, ensuring safe transportation and promoting sports and recreation safety allows children to continue to explore, learn and grow without the disruption and long-term effects of injuries.

So, to help parents and caregivers reduce the risk of injuries in their kids, South Texas Health System Children’s will dedicate its latest Let’s Talk Children’s Health webinar to injury prevention.

Streaming live via the STHS Children’s page this Wednesday, September 17, from 5:30 to 6:30 pm, the online seminar will feature an emergency medicine and pediatric critical care physician who will provide parents and caregivers with strategies to protect their children from harm and help ensure they have a better chance at leading healthy, fulfilling lives.

Spreading Happy & Hopeful Thoughts: To commemorate Su***de Prevention Awareness Month in an impactful way, pediatric patients at South Texas Health System Children’s took a meaningful step toward breaking the stigma surrounding mental health by writing their own inspirational messages on chalkboards to provide hope and encouragement to others who may be struggling with their mental health or suicidal ideation as part of STHS Behavioral's initiative.

At STHS Children’s, we recognize that mental health matters at every age. Pediatric patients, even while receiving care in the hospital, may face emotional challenges that are just as real as their physical ones. Creating opportunities for them to express hope, compassion and strength not only supports their healing, but it also empowers them to be part of something bigger.

Thank you to The Auxiliary to South Texas Health System and the facility's Child Life Program for their generous support because a few words of inspiration can make a world of difference.
