Safeguarding Young Athletes: Each year, more than 2,000 children lose their lives to sudden cardiac arrest in the U.S., per the CDC, accounting for 3 - 5% of all deaths among children ages 5-19.
A compact, portable device that evaluates heart rhythm, an automated external defibrillator (AED) delivers a life-saving shock when necessary. Easy to use and highly effective, AEDs significantly improve survival outcomes.
During a special press conference at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Edinburg RGV last week, South Texas Health System donated two AEDs each to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Edinburg RGV, Harlingen, Mission, Boys & Girls Club of McAllen, Boys & Girls Club of Pharr - San Juan, Boys & Girls Club of San Benito and Boys and Girls Club of Weslaco Inc. to support the safety of young athletes across the Rio Grande Valley.
“This investment goes far beyond equipment, it demonstrates a commitment to the health, safety and well-being of the youth and families we serve,” says Daisy Martinez, CEO, Boys & Girls Clubs of Edinburg Rio Grande Valley, Inc.
Following the $24,000 donation of the portable, life-saving devices, the STHS Education Department provided training to approximately 25 staff members from the seven clubs aimed at spotting the warning signs of sudden cardiac arrest, administering CPR, placing AED pads correctly, following the device’s voice prompts and coordinating with emergency services for the best possible outcome.
This donation and training reflect STHS’ ongoing commitment to building a healthier, safer community by ensuring the places where our children learn and grow are equipped to respond when it matters most. (Boys & Girls Clubs of America)
