Weightbearing vs non-weightbearing:

The functional position of the foot and ankle is one of weightbearing. Foot and ankle deformity may be decreased or become absent on non-weightbearing x-rays as compared to weightbearing x-rays. Therefore, foot and ankle disorders including flatfeet, ligamentous injuries of the midfoot, ankle arthritis, bunions, and hammertoes that are well-demonstrated on weightbearing x-rays may be underestimated or not appreciated at all on non-weightbearing x-rays.

Take this image above for example:
The ankle mortise view of the unloaded,non-weightbearing ankle (A and C) and weight-bearing ankle (B and D), showing increase in varus (B) and valgus (D) talar tilt upon weight-bearing. Arrows mark increases in the lateral (B) and medial (D) tibiotalar compartment space; arrowheads mark concurrent decreases in the medial (B) and lateral (D) tibiotalar compartment space.

Here at OFAA, we are pleased to be able to offer weight bearing x-ray as well as weight bearing CT as a part of our thorough workup in evaluating and treating our patients.

•Monday Meets•

Meet another one of our wonderful MA’s, Diana.

Diana was born and raised in Guthrie, OK.  She has been married to her husband, Comanche, for 30 years and they still reside in Guthrie.  She has two daughters Kristen and Kiah and five grandchildren.  Diana enjoys spending time with family and friends at the lake, swimming, fishing, church time, traveling, and gardening.  Her goal in life is to enjoy each day as a new beginning and to somehow make a difference in someone's life.

Diana truly has been a blessing to us here at OFAA and we could not imagine work without her! She has truly stepped up in a time of need. She is a bright smiling face greeting all who enter our clinic. She has brought so much to our practice and we are so thankful to have her as a part of our clinic family.

Arthritis of the ankle can result from a chronic, non-traumatic cause, from previous trauma to the joint, or from a medical condition. Chronic, non-traumatic ankle arthritis is related to the genetic, anatomic malalignment of the ankle joint in which forces are placed inappropriately on the joint overtime, leading to chronic degeneration. The cartilage between the bone wears away which can cause rubbing of bone on bone and the formation of painful osteophytes (bone spurs). Traumatic causes of ankle arthritis include ankle fractures, torn ligaments or untreated chronic ankle instability. Medical conditions that cause ankle arthritis include rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, gout, and psoriatic arthritis.

•Monday Meets•

Everyone meet Cayla, one of our medical assistants who helps us both in the front office as well in the back office.

Cayla was born and raised in Oklahoma City and graduated from Mustang High School. She has completed her Associates degree at OCCC and is now working to gain some experience so that she can decide which direction she would like to go while obtaining a bachelors degree and planning for her career.

In her free time she likes to read, draw and spend time with her wonderful roommate trying out new coffee and boba shops.

Cayla has been a true blessing to us here at OFAA and we cannot imagine work without her! She is a bright and warm welcome for our patients when they enter our office!

03/11/2022

Ankle sprains occur when the ligaments around the ankle joint are stretched too far and tear. Ligaments are strong, fibrous tissues that connect one bone to another. They are important to provide stability to a joint and keep the joint in a correct alignment. The most common type of ankle sprain is an inversion injury in which the foot rolls inward underneath the leg. During this injury the ligament that is most commonly torn is the anterior talofibular ligament (ATFL), which connects the talus bone to the fibula bone on the outside of the ankle. The second most commonly injured ligament is the calcaneal fibular ligament (CFL) which connects the calcaneus (heel bone) to the fibula, also on the outside of the ankle.

Have you recently injured your ankle or have another concern with your feet/ankles? Call Orthopedic Foot and Ankle Associates for high-quality personalized foot and ankle care, or request an appointment online today!
