What does it mean to curate your life?

I know you have many things in your life that would be considered good. Healthy even. But is it great?

The job of the curator is not to separate the greatness from the crap. It's to delineate the difference between goodness and greatness.

It could be anything. A place you go, a thing you do, stuff you have, socials you follow, and the list goes on and on.

It might be good. But is it great?

You must look at your life, see where you're getting the best results, and take responsibility.

I’m currently affected emotionally by the joy of legacy today. When I was a young therapist candidate, my clinical supervisor, Rilda, introduced me to Dr. Pipher’s book, “Letters to a Young Therapist.” The book impacted my early development in a really important way. When my candidacy came to an end and I made my way towards licensure, I reached out to Dr. Pipher about writing Rilda a personal note. It was just an attempt at an unlikely thing, like when you send a wedding invitation to a famous person.

She wrote the note. And I gave it to Rilda proudly. A special moment to mark an important period and person in my journey.

When I became a supervisor, I knew that “Letters…” would become a part of my teachings. A timeless record of a mature therapists honest reflections of the work we do.

This week I received this message personally from Dr. Pipher. And with this message from a personal icon, I pray the legacy of this helping work continues on.

Here is your gentle reminder that just because someone is in your circle, it doesn’t always mean they are in your corner.

You can go ahead and set that boundary now if you like.

Yesterday I was buying a bit of candy from the general store of the university where I teach. The young man at the register (college student) was in a conversation with a similar aged male who was expressing his feelings around his changing body after getting a little older, gaining some weight, and just generally not feeling confident anymore. The first fella says to him, “I can tell you’re young just by looking at your eyes. There is a lot of youth there and you have a very handsome face.”

I was so encouraged by the amount of personal security that gave this young male permission to tell his friend something that would certainly build him up. This is what healthy masculinity can look like among other men.

Older men, take note from these young fellas and learn from them in humility.
