Wellness on the go tip #5: Add aromatherapy to your day – Essential oils have been used for generations to reduce anxiety, ease depression, boost energy levels, speed up the healing process, eliminate headaches, boost cognitive performance, induce sleep, strengthen the immune system, reduce pain, improve digestion, and many others. There are so many different oils for different uses, it can be overwhelming. Keep it simple and start with a few basics like lavender for stress, anxiety, and sleep and peppermint for energy, focus, and headaches. Simply diffuse or rub on the bottoms of your feet to enjoy the benefits!

Wellness on the go tip #4: Establish a regular routine – Our bodies have a rhythm that flows naturally when we stay on a consistent schedule. A regular routine will improve sleep quality and decrease stress, which will improve energy and the ability to make other healthier choices. And remember to schedule in a little time for fun and relaxation along the way! (Here’s an extra little tip for those who travel frequently: Eating in the time zone where you are helps your body adjust more easily.)

Wellness on the go tip #3: Make meditation/mindfulness a part of your day – It’s not necessary to sit in an uncomfortable position and burn incense to reap the benefits of meditation. Beginning each day and even ending each day with 5-10 minutes can greatly increase concentration, mental clarity, tolerance, sense of well-being, ability to relate to others, happiness, and many other benefits. Studies have even proven that just 10 minutes a day will strengthen the immune system! A great app for short guided mindfulness meditations is Headspace.

Kindness & generosity have a profound effect on happiness. A wise & generous woman once told me, “If you are having a bad day, do something for someone else. It will turn your bad day into a good day”. In the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey, we have a great opportunity to extend kindness through volunteer work, donations, & prayer for those who are facing the overwhelming task of rebuilding their lives. Be kind, be generous, be happy.

Healthy meal planning made easy: Do your grocery shopping on a different day than meal prep. In fact, it’s pretty much a rule at my house that we go out to eat on grocery shopping day! Within the next day or two after buying groceries, set aside time to chop veggies & place into individual containers. Get your husband (& kids if they are old enough to handle a knife safely) to get in on the fun family chop night while watching a favorite show or talking about the day. This can include onions, peppers, mushrooms, zucchini, potatoes, butternut squash, etc. Each night, toss veggies, protein & seasonings on a sheet pan, wok or grill for a delicious balanced dinner. Simple!

Although exercise is vital to our health and well-being, going to the gym 3 times a week cannot fully reverse our sedentary lifestyles. Try adding movement throughout your day: Go ahead, tap your foot to your favorite tune, dance while making dinner, play with your kids, take a walk at sunset with someone you love.
