Our friends and relatives in Tulsa are hosting a powerful event centered on Indigenous maternal health, birth sovereignty, and cultural knowledge.

Cherokee filmmaker Taylor Hensel will be sharing a preview of the documentary What She Carries, a film following Indigenous mothers, families, and birthworkers across Turtle Island as they reclaim birth, loss, and autonomy through cultural knowledge and community care.

The evening will also feature a talk from Navajo midwife and policy advocate Nicolle Arthun, founder of Changing Woman Initiative.

This conversation reflects something we deeply believe at Rural Oklahoma Birth & Wellness Initiative:
Birth is not only a medical event. It is culture, community, ceremony, and sovereignty.

We love to see the research support our community!

Planned home birth with a qualified midwife continues to show strong outcomes for low risk families. The evidence is clear, and families deserve policies that reflect that reality. NACPM advocates for licensure and integration so CPMs can practice safely and legally in every state. Access to community birth is a maternal health issue.

In a new study presented at , researchers shared that pregnant patients who stopped taking their antidepressant medication during pregnancy were almost twice as likely to experience a mental health emergency compared with pregnant patients who continued taking their prescription.
