Summer is the Perfect Time to Schedule Wisdom Teeth Extraction
Your wisdom teeth are at the back of the mouth and are the last teeth to erupt through the gums. They typically appear between the ages of 17 and 25. It is strongly recommended that your teen is seen by an oral surgeon before his or her wisdom teeth break through to determine if there is room in the mouth for the wisdom teeth. Without the required room, the eruption of wisdom teeth may lead to crowding, which can cause several dental problems. Depending on the specific condition, most dentists recommend that wisdom teeth be removed. Summer is right around the corner and if your child needs to have wisdom teeth removed, summer vacation just might be the best time to schedule this type of oral surgery.
Why Remove Wisdom Teeth During Summer Break?
During the school year, many families face daily chaos with work, school, homework assignments and extracurricular activities. After oral surgery to remove wisdom teeth, your child will typically need to take time to recover, which means missing a few days of school as well as you missing a few days of work. The ability to avoid missing work and/or school is one of the main reasons summer vacation is the perfect time to schedule the removal of wisdom teeth. There are several other reasons why summer is the best time for this procedure, including:

Pain control
Many people can control the pain after this procedure with over-the-counter medications. However, some people require pain medications prescribed by the dentist, which can make them nauseous and interfere with the ability to focus and stay awake. During summer break, your child will be able to rest comfortably, with or without prescription medications, without the worry of going to school for a few days.
Special diet
After wisdom teeth are removed, your child’s mouth will be sore, so he or she will need to stick to a special diet for a few days. Having the procedure performed during summer break will ensure that your child will have access to foods that are comfortable for him or her to eat. Summertime is also the perfect time for ice cream and popsicles, which will help to ease the pain and discomfort at the site of extraction.
Swelling
There will be swelling after the extraction and it typically lasts a couple of days. Teens are notorious for being concerned about their appearance, so summer break is the perfect time to allow for the swelling to diminish without the worry of others seeing the swelling.
Infection
A common complication of wisdom teeth extraction is infection. The infection can be easily treated with antibiotics, but an infection can lengthen the recovery period. Having the procedure during summer break will allow you to keep a closer eye on how well your child is healing.

Schedule Regular Dental Appointments
It is important for your child to visit the dentist regularly for examinations and X-rays to make sure there are no changes in his or her teeth and gums, and to determine whether wisdom teeth should be removed. Scheduling the extraction of your teen’s wisdom teeth during summer break allows you to ensure he or she is healing properly and deal with potential complications without causing your child to get behind in school work and/or miss any school related activities.
