Sticker shock from branded medicines?
Copay cards, accessed through manufacturer websites, can help.
Simply google the name of the branded medicine to see if there is a card available.
Note that most government-sponsored plans (Medicare, Medicaid, some Tricare) are not eligible for copay cards. BCBS-Federal, on the other hand, works more like private insurance and is eligible.

As an example, I entered "trintellix copay card" into a google search bar. The site for the copay card popped up as:

I am able to clinick on this link and access both a text copay card to my phone, as well as an actual savings card, if I desire.

Genetic testing for pharmacology...I hear a lot about this one, but what is it? What does it entail?
Briefly, this type of genetic testing can reflect whether an individual is able to break down a given medicine, through the liver enzymes that may be required to break down that medicine. It can therefore demonstrate whether a medicine is more or less likely to be effective, and more or less likely to cause side effects.
Genetic testing will NOT tell you for sure whether a medicine WILL work...it has a better failure prediction. Some pharmacologic genetic testing can help evaluate the potential for certain significant side effects, such as Stevens-Johnson syndrome (a rare, severe skin reaction to medicines.)
Included is a representative example from one company, genomind, demonstrating genetic results. The genes reflected encode for liver enzymes responsible for metabolizing medicines. In this example, 2c19 is "normal" extensive metabolism, and 2d6 is poor. This would lead the prescriber to lean towards avoiding 2d6 metabolised medicines (prozac, cymbalta, effexor etc) and favor 2c19 medicines (lexapro, zoloft.)

Very tough day for many of the folks I know and work with. Many, many, many prayers for brave family and friends who continue to put one foot in front of the other, walking a path none would ever chose.
A desperate message to those on this path: you did not fail. You did not "miss" something. You could not have changed this outcome by any magic word, deed, action, thought...
Psychiatric illnesses sometimes kill people...the same way cancer sometimes kills people...the same way heart attacks kill people. This is the illness...it is not and was not you.
I am very sad that you are on this journey...and am hoping that you are able to be surrounded by a community that loves and cares for you.

I did a thing! This is a short book (hopefully one of a series) with the goal of making psychiatric pharmacology approachable to consumers. The format is a growth opportunity for me, but the medicine explanations and charts are legit...hope it's helpful!
