You’ll sometimes hear the terms Sensory Deprivation and Floatation Therapy used interchangeably, so let’s give you a bit of a breakdown between the two.
A sensory deprivation float means there isn’t any lights, music or any other sensory input. This is where you will get the majority of your cognitive benefits. Removing all sensory input allows your brain a break in order to process and assimilate all the information stored in it, which allows it to move information from the subconscious into the conscious. This is why many people will have creative ideas and solve problems while floating or shortly after the float. It also will allow your brain to enter into Theta waves, which has a big impact on this as well. You’ll still of course be getting all of the body benefits of the float.
If you use lights or music, or stretch around a lot during the float, this is more known as Floatation Therapy. You won’t have as many of the cognitive benefits this way, but you are still getting all the other benefits such as reduced anxiety and cortisol, pain relief, increased immunity response, lowered blood pressure, better sleep and more.
While you will receive many more benefits by going the whole sensory deprivation route, it really depends on what you want to achieve as to which one is better for you.
